The new G Star NY RAW-collection was a fusion between 3D, craftsmanship, the elegancy of 1920’s city life and outdoor. That sounds a bit weird, but somehow the designteam of G-Star made it into a modern, consistent collection with a clean urban vibe. The collection also showcased hidden functionalities, based on 1920’s explorers mixed with elegant tailoring. Heavy protection-wear is back into fashion.

Highlights of the collection were the New Charlie Pant for men, featuring a 3D-shaped leg and extreme high back, originally to protect from weather conditions at sea, and inspired by an over pant, which creates volume. The padded Jade Skirt for women featured an extreme knee silhouette created for protection, whilst looking elegant due to high tech tailoring. It was combined with the utility Selwyn Vest, featuring a waxed finish inspired by early North Sea fishermen, who would rub linseed oil into their smocks for waterproofing and windproofing.

Representation of this Metropolitan Explorer theme included the Launceton Coat for both men and women, featuring a storm collar and the natural insulating properties of wool to create a weather proof piece, whilst having a refined tailored silhouette. The city camouflage modern geometric print in the collection also underpinned the core theme, as expressed in the Mackay Jacket.

Held at the Pier 94 exhibition space in Manhattan the G-star fashion show, attended by celebs like Kelly Rowland, Kelly Osbourne, Natasha Beddingfield, Jay Manual en Miss Jay Alexander (ANTM), started off with some very clean looks. The first twelve looks where a mix of light denim and white. The clothes felt modern due to the color, the many zippers and pockets and the 3D shapes.

The extra functional details on most of the coats (zippers, hoodies, pockets) were inspired by the desert denim theme of the show. G-star made the high collars and head scarves worn with caps on top (meant to keep the desert sand out) look tough and streetwise.

Halfway the show some sand-colored items were introduced; cargo pants, jackets and a long, sleeves, flared coat. They looked stunning with the light blue colored denim items and were roughened up by lots of belts.

One thing’s for sure: the G-star girls are going to look very tough next spring. Their denim trousers were often even wider than the ones the male models wore. Not a skinny in sight. Especially the dark denim pants shown towards the end of the show looked gigantic. Yet combined with a sleeveless top those pants still felt feminine.

We can’t wait to see the faces of G-star, Liv Tyler and chess champion Magnus Carlsen (who were in the audience), in some of these brand new designs.

Since Liv Tyler is the face of G-star’s new campaign she, of course, had to attend the label’s fashion show. But she wasn’t the only celeb that turned up. Kelly Osbourne, Natasha Bedingfield and Peaches Geldof were there too to watch the most colorful G-star collection ever.

Though we normally see several different shades of denim, this time there were lots of colors. The bright yellow, green and blue surely made the collection look like fun.

A male model in a thick yellow coat and a matching yellow hat looked like a fireman who just stepped out of a cartoon. And on all of the jackets cheerful bright-colored contours of pockets were clearly visible.

With items like overalls, colored hats and gloves and checked pants it was clear the Dutch denim label didn’t take itself too seriously this time.

Naturally all crazy and oversized items were combined with some good denim designs. Pants, shirts, overalls and shorts were presented in different hues of blue.

And although G-star is known as a denim label, denim didn’t seem the most important aspect of the collection as it was overshadowed by all the color-blocking outfits.

G-Star Catwalk Fashion Show SS10

G Star took over the Hammerstein Ballroom again this season, pulling off an extraordinairy and well-choreographed fashionshow on an elaborately constructed runway flanked by celebrities (Lindsay Lohan, Taylor Momsen, Jared Leto, et al.). Models in all white denim emerged from behind scrims to plot their zigzagging, overlapping course through the theater—an army of tough, monochrome urbanites. As always, G-Star is experimenting with the ways in which denim can be worn. A long white tuxedo jumpsuit with revealing slits cut up each side, had a trompe-l’oeil bolero in the brand’s signature fabric attached at the shoulders. Teeny-tiny denim bikini shorts and fitted and flared blazers in a classic dark wash.

Lichting 2009 Catwalk Fashion Show SS10

Lichting 2009 presented the best of each of the 7 Dutch fashion academies: Nathanya Zwart, Erna Einarsdottir, Ratna Ho, Ireneo Ciammella, Kai Salomon, malousebastiaan, Joran de Kok, Bregje Cox, Liesbeth van Gemeren, Aida Saracini, Ann Boogaerts, Marina Krunic, Twan Meijerink and Manon Boertien. Ann Boogaerts won the G-Star Raw Talent Award, a price worth 10.000 euro.
Lichting 2009 turned out to be one of the most spectacular catwalk shows during this season’s Amsterdam Fashion Week. Lichting is a unique platform founded to fill the gap between Dutch fashion academies’ most promising students and the professional fashion industry.
This season’s Lichting show covered the collections of 14 students, 2 of every fashion academy and was sponsored by G-Star Raw. The best designer won a price worth 10.000 euros and a trip to G-Star’s presentation at NYC Fashion Week. Ann Boogaerts of ArteZ won the G-Star Raw Talent Award.
A panel, consisting 4 of Europe’s most important fashion professionals (Wendy Dagworthy, co-founder of London Fashion Week, Garance Doré, writer and photographer, Susanna Lau, editor of Dazed & Confused and Lucas Ossendrijver, designer for Lanvin Homme) chose Boogaarts as best young designer.
All collections captured of-the-moment elements in global fashion. Like the pastel color gradients and oversized pieces with focus on shape. Also deconstruction, showed by studded and bead-covered outfits. Some collections looked like chaotic outfits made from ripped, cut and draped materials.
The best collections were the ones that were least on-fashion, showing something new. Like Ratna Ho’s collection, inspired by the ugliness of tribal tattoos, which resulted in curvy pantyhoses, pleated skirts and tops made of see-through materials. Designer-duo Malousebastiaan chose to use a round shape which doesn’t have a start or finishing point. Round curves were translated into blown-up silhouettes and dresses looked like they were grown organically.
Bregje Cox was inspired by big cities’ super structures and rare etnical images. Cut-open dresses and big mirror elements looked like Asian symbols or an aerial road map.
Manon Boertien used her positive memories of religion and spirituality and sunlight reflecting crystals as inspiration. The outfits in bold shapes and facet-like prints looked truly happy and positive.
Although each member of the panel praised the collections for their high quality, young Belgian designer Ann Boogaerts from ArtEZ was happy to receive the award. Her collection was inspired by Belgian royalty and Dutch artists like Mondrian. There were beautiful geometrical shaped dresses in bright colors like yellow and red. Fine embroidery and stylish hair and shoes made the outfits look royal-worthy. The Dutch national anthem played during the show. Boogaerts seemed to be proud of her being a young Dutch designer.
