SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers Amsterdam Fashion Week fall/winter 2016

Leave it up to Truus and Riet Spijkers to take care of our Saturday night entertainment. Once again they delighted us with yet another on point SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers collection. Discover Moon Tan, inspired by the moon and a trip to Shanghai the Arnhem based designers made earlier this year. Their muse: Ching Shih, a pirate and a princess of the Chinese Sea in the 18th century. Think: lots of color, graphic cuts and theme-inspired prints like an ikat pattern designed around Chinese landscapes and cube-like panters. Suits in large woolen tartan prints and lurex jacquards were followed by dresses made of extra soft crêpe de Chine, wool and satin. Even jeans and sweatshirts made their appearance. Finished off with XL mirror earrings, pendants, brooches, reflecting the catalk lights like the full moon. Creating ensembles both elegant and comfortable, suitable for both office and happy hours.

SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers Amsterdam Catwalk Fashion Show SS2013

Truus Spijkers and Riet Spijkers presented a signature SIS collection tonight, named I am in training, don’t kiss me. The looks were inspired by the circus, which was visible in the clothing details and the circus animal prints. Even the backdrop and the music breathed circus, while the smiling models with curly hair gave the show an extra positive vibe.

They wore wearable dresses in different colored parts and playful ruffled skirts. Printed hot shorts were worn with loose fitting tops, small colored belts and elegant heels. Like always at SIS there were a few suits too, a light pink version with a blouse in the same color being the most stunning.

An extra playful accent was added to the show when a dressed up circus dog (actually the dog of the Spijkers-sisters) was sent on the runway, accompanied by one of the models. Overall it was one of the sexiest, most cheerful SIS collections so far. Let’s keep this positive vibe throughout the night!

An interview with Truus Spijkers

On track
On Friday 13 July designers Truus and Riet Spijkers will present their SIS collection during Amsterdam Fashion Week and they’re more on track than ever before. Truus: “We have shown our collection in Berlin a week before the show, so all of the designs already had to be finished. This gives us some extra time for the last show preparations.”

It’s already the fifth time Spijkers en Spijkers are showing their work during Amsterdam Fashion Week, but that doesn’t mean the sisters aren’t excited. “It is starting to feel like a routine, but I still get chills right before the show every single time. The nice thing about showing in Amsterdam is that it is always very relaxed. Everything is well organized and if we forget something on the day of the show we technically are able to go back to Arnhem and get it. That’s a reassuring thought”, says Truus.

Circus inspired
For spring/summer 2013 Riet and Truus chose circus as a source of inspiration. “The very first circus artists at the turn of the century, the women in the trapezes, are who inspired us. We thought it was a light, dreamy and fresh theme for a spring collection. We want to portray the exotic atmosphere in the city when there was a circus in town. The lights and everyone all dressed up; more or less the feeling we got after seeing the movie Water for Elephants”

Pastels & Primary colours
The new SIS collection will include around 40 looks in a palette of different bright shades. “We start off with several pastel looks, than we introduce some primary colors and we slowly go to a darker palette. We’ve used a graphic cirque print, which in combination with black represents a city night when there’s a circus in town and it’s colourful lights. There is a more literal print too with small circus animals.”

Overall Spijkers and Spijkers stayed very true to their SIS signature. Truus: “The silhouettes will be smooth, we worked with colored parts and there will be graphic elements like our SIS designs have always had before. We’ve used cotton, silk, knitwear, crêpe de Chine and we even introduce a printed jeans. It will be an accessible show like people are used to with SIS.”

The new SIS Spring Summer 2013 collection will be shown on Friday 13 July at 06.00 PM

Yet again Truus and Riet Spijkers chose a strong woman as the inspiration for their new show. This time they were inspired by Bonnie, from the thirties crime couple Bonnie and Clyde. Faye Dunaway, the actrice who played Bonnie in 1967, was their muse for this collection.

Designs were feminine with a boyish twist. There were perfect pleated pants, oversize knitted cardigans, simple dresses with an accentuated waist. The designs came in multiple shades and prints, which came together in an art-deco way. The palette included shades like light grey, blue, camel and coral. Prints were made out of graphic patterns, small pistols and black checks.

Looks were styled off by berets and high heels with light glittering socks. Now that’s how you make crime sexy!

No doubt that the Roaring Twenties are the favorite era of the Spijkers-sisters. They picked this period – in which women tried to free themselves –  before as a source of inspiration. Spijkers en Spijkers are not alone in this for next summer, in New York there were more designers who were influenced by this stylish period, like Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch.

Spijkers en Spijkers took the silhouette and used their signature geometric play, colors like black and white to form their collection. Dresses dominated the collection, a loose pantsuit here and there and fragile chains as decoration or part of the construction. Fringes added a frivolous detail.

This upcoming edition of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week the twins sisters Riet en Truus Spijkers will be the first to show their  SIS collection. We spoke to the sisters about this new collection and what kind of story they will be telling during the opening event.

“We’re very excited to be part of the opening show this season. For us that’s even better than just doing a regular fashion show. It results in a lot of media attention, which is one of the reasons we decided to show during Amsterdam Fashion Week. More media coverage results in more requests for our collection and that’s always good.”

It’s only one year ago that Spijkers en Spijkers launched it’s little sister SIS, yet so far the new line is doing great. “We are getting applications for the collections from abroad as well. SIS is now being sold in countries like Italy, Japan and Australia.”

As for the new summer collection we can expect nothing but summery/sunny clothing. “The collection is sunny, optimistic and a little naughty. The theme is Bain du Soleil. Again it will have some twenties references, which we also used in our music. The soundtrack will be modern but with a definite twenties twist.”

Like in every collection the sisters chose a certain woman as their female muse for the collection. “This time Olympic swimmer Zus Braun gave the designers their inspiration. Due to that the collection has some slightly sporty details in it, but mostly done in a very feminine way.”

“The clothes will have a tight fit and come in colors like rose, pistachio, amber and nautical blue. There are some bright Au Bain de Soleil prints as well. We used cotton, crêpe de chine and some very comfy jerseys. It’s just a fun collection, so we’re very much looking forward to the show.”

SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers will be shown on Wednesday evening 13 July at 6.30 p.m.

We saw some Fast Ladies on the runway at SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers. Wearing loose-fitting overalls (with lammy collars), knitted dresses, leather jackets and loose pants the girls rocked the show, inspired by the first women in race sport and aviation.

Truus and Riet Spijkers always felt that women should feel free and live up to their dreams, so they chose Amelia Earhart (the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean) as the muse of this new collection.

The silhouettes were very tailored, yet everything looked very comfortable and elegant. The shades of black, true blue, dreamblue, grey blue, ochre, ecru and light taupe worked together beautifully. The brand new ‘cloud print’ the sisters designed in red and blue felt like a modern camouflage print and looked fresh.

Congrats on your second SIS collection Spijkertjes!
