Sage & Ivy Catwalk Fashion Show AIFWSS2012

After days of rain the sun came out today. What a relief for designer Alexia van Engelen and her team. She was the only designer this week showing her collection outside. And not just on a regular catwalk. No, they built a runway under water in the pond at the Westergasterrein in Amsterdam.

This created the illusion that the models were walking on water. The water, the sun, the catwalk and the models created the perfect picture together. A picture that fit the new Sage & Ivy collection perfectly, especially since it was inspired by water.

The clothes showed many different sides of water. The way in which water reflects things, the look of a sunset, the transparency of water and all kind of colors that appear as the sun shines on water.

The designs looked feminine and sweet, exactly the kind of thing you expect from Alexia if you know her. The delicate dresses, pants, suit jackets, sheer blouses, capes and accessories all were beautifully made and all had lot of details (braiding and draping) to them.

Especially the maxi dresses and skirts in the water gave the show an extra dramatic effect. Everything fell right in to place. It was a show to remember and, if you ask us, one of the highlights of the Amsterdam Fashion Week.

Pauline van Dongen & Etranger LAB Catwalk Fashion Shows SS2012

Pauline van Dongen

Pauline van Dongen and Etranger were the last two designers presenting their LAB collections on Thursday. Pauline’s collection Kinetic Landscapes was perfect. Her dresses had unexpected shapes, lovely details and came in beautiful shades like orange, blue, grey and black. For this collection Pauline was inspired by the powerful force of water and air that both can make big changes to different landscapes. The shoes in this collection were made by Anna Korshun and the jewelry was designed by Nathalie Tappin.

Etranger

The new collection of designer Lifu Hsiao was inspired by an epic movie by David Lynch: ‘Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me’. Especially the styling and the themes of this movie inspired him to design some sexy flowy dresses and some cute babydoll versions. The shades, ranging from white to pastel and bright red all had a special shiny effect to them and were combined with sheer, black cape-like layers. Check out the gallery below.

Winde Rienstra & GOMES ESSER DESIGN – LAB Catwalk Fashion Shows SS2012

Winde Rienstra – 11:11

Winde Rienstra and Gomes Esser Design were next up at Amsterdam Fashion Week Lab. Winde really was the public’s favorite; everyone in the audience seemed blown away by her structured, handcrafted designs. Her designs were on the edge of clothes and objects and were not all very wearable, but sure painted a nice picture.

Gomes Esser Design – The perfection of imperfection

Designer Aleyda and Denise from Gomes Esser Design presented their work for the second time during AIFW. It showed their surrealistic and futuristic signature by combining lots of metal (jewelry and head pieces), leather and innovative solar panels.
There were male and female models and America’s Next Top Model participant Sara Longoria was one of them. She fiercely walked the show and is also the new face of Gomes Esser Design.

Roya Hesam & ZEM – LAB Catwalk Fashion Shows SS2012

Thursday is one of the busiest days of the whole Fashion Week with a lot of LAB shows. We started off with ZEM and Roya Hesam, two upcoming designers, who both presented 10 looks.

ZEM – menswear

Designer Samira Algoe based her second AIFW- collection on classic beachwear for men. She used sun, see and beach as the inspiration for her clean and well tailored looks. Most items were made out of two parts (and two or more shades). The sheer silk cotton and the ultra-short pants appeared a little feminine, but overall the clothes felt pretty wearable. Sunny accessories were gave the collection a nice little extra.

Roya Hesam – womenswear

Roya showed her minimalistic but very feminine collection Facing Skills. She used airy fabrics and soft shades. Her dresses, jumpsuits and pants looked elegant and smooth, perfect for summer. There was a little boob flash here and there, but that didn’t spoiled the fun.

Catwalk Fashion Show SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers SS2012

Tonight the Amsterdam Fashion Week kicked off with the SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers (their second line) fashion show. A great start of a week full of fashion!

Designers Truus and Riet Spijkers presented a fun, sunny collection which turned a big smile on our faces. They were inspired by the twenties and Olympic swimmer Zus Braun in particular. The swim details were visible through fun play/bathing suits and old skool bathing caps.

SIS was divided in day wear and evening wear and overall felt very playful and optimistic. Shades of rose, red, pistachio, amber and nautical blue were used in combination with white and black. The models looked feminine in jumpsuits, shorts, jeans skirts (with large pockets) and casual suit jackets.

Stripes were used in every possible way, a zig zag print came by and a ‘vintage’ fashion illustration formed the print on some of the SIS-tops. Multi-colored belts, sunny shades and cane hats added just the right feeling to some of the looks. Overall it was just a very joyful and wearable collection, exactly what a second line should be.

Catwalk Fashion Show Ilja Couture / Ready to Fish AW2012

Today Dutch designer Ilja Visser followed in the footsteps of Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham and brought intimacy back to the runway. Not only was her brand new Ready to Fish collection narrated look by look, different courses of a Ilja Visser menu were served in between every few looks too.

It was a lovely setting and there was a nice atmosphere. You could not tell Ilja’s whole team (hairdressers, make-up artist, marketing and shop employees to name a few) had been working all day to make sure four different shows were held. Four different shows, four different audiences and four different types of amusement (lunch, drinks, a little boat trip and diner).

The Ready to Fish collection was all inspired by the eighties movie Paris, Texas and brought a mix of masculine details and feminine elegance. There was a lot of asymmetry, which we’ve seen before at Ready to Fish. Also, the bright yellow and pink shades and the raw denim stood out. The clothes felt thick for summer, but thanks to the choice of fabrics (linen, loose knits) were in fact airy.

Straight after the ready to wear collection presentation we were presented with a few very strong Ilja couture looks from the collection named Pluche. The inspiration – politicians and formalities – was not very visible, but the creations (mainly black and beige) were stunning. Business influences like high shoulders and classic cuffs were combined with feminine silhouettes. Ilja used a lot of fake fur and played with the structure of her couture designs.

Both collection were beautifully made and presented in a great way. We had a fun night and can only hope more designers decide to go back to where fashion shows once started; intimate, personal and memorable.

The three pictures above are three looks from the Ilja couture collection.

Raf Simons Catwalk Fashion Show Paris SS2012

Raf Simons’ own ss2012 collection was well balanced. A tailored black suit was the canvas on which the Belgian designer build his minimalistic vision, with roomy coats (and some tunics)  in mismatched checks or pastel-colors, sleeveless leather T-shirts, sleeveless knits with a small flower-print or shirts in contrasting black & white.

Especially the colorful checks added an upbeat character to this strict and minimal collection.

Dior Homme Catwalk Fashion Show Paris SS2012

Kris van Assche continued to celebrate the art of tailoring at the Dior Homme-collection. The ss2012 collection looked plain & minimal but oh so luxurious.

Shirts and tapered trousers came in natural linen and were trimmed in lambskin. Trenches appeared in powdery silk taffeta. Jackets were the stars of this precise and youthful collection, from handsome double-breasted numbers to roomy shirt-like and tunic styles, often closed at the throat and flaring open. The black hats. shoes and leather wristbands were the only contrasting details.
