SuperTrash Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

All the ingredients for the perfect SuperTrash show were there Saturday night. A great show area (Passenger Terminal), an enormous crowd (incl. a front row full of Dutch celebs) and an absolute party vibe.

Olcay Gulsen, head designer of Supertrash, and her team put attention in every little detail. All guests were welcomed by ladies dressed in golden SuperTrash pants and printed tees and everyone in the front row had someone waiting for them with a sailor cap on, with their names written on it.

Yet though we expected a nautical theme in the collection as well, we couldn’t spot it in the clothes. The collection was – as always – super sexy and feminine. Gorgeous long curly haired models showed silhouette accentuating dresses, playful skirts, sparkling pants and floor sweeping gowns. All looks styled off perfectly by chunky shiny bracelets and high silver heels.

After a first few looks in off white, beige and sand colored shades, the color palette changed into more earthy tones. An ethnic print, shown on a strong tough jacket/dress looked like perfection. The bright colored zigzag print that was  introduced (on a pair of pants, a long dress, top and jumpsuit ) later on felt a little too summer-ish for FW2012. But Olcay made up for with her finale of long sexy dresses. Those goddess gowns came in sparkly brown, beige, turquoise, purple and black and were the cherries on the pie for this fall/winter collection.

But no SuperTrash finale without designer Olcay showing  off her fabulous looks on stage, of course. This time it was an extra special appearance since Olcay did a small performance (in the style of Beyoncés Billboard awards show last year) while launching her first perfume ‘Phenomenal’.

A great collection out, a first perfume on the market and an enormous fashion crowd, who loves it all. What more can a designer wish for?

Olcay Gulsen doesn’t hold a SuperTrash fashion show every season, but when she does, she sure does it right!

Tony Cohen Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

Tony Cohen’s new collection had some international allure today. Not only did the production of the show feel like some Paris fashion week show (Rick Owens?), even the designs seemed to aim more at an international market (Haider Ackermann?)

Tony’s designs were asymmetric, duocolored and formed a surprising mix of different textures. Nylon, wool, silk and fur came together in several looks.

Pointed vests and draped cardigans were tight together by leather waistbands and wintery scarves were tossed around the models’ bodies.

Some of dresses will look better on a more curvy woman, the silk pants on the other hand will look unflattering on any woman who’s larger than a size XS.

The deep colored looks (deep green, aubergine and plum) were styled off by dark ankle boots and leather & fur Laimbock gloves; simple, but strong.

It was a pleasant show to watch and we’re sure we’ll see some of these designs on Tony Cohen’s famous clientele (who sat front row this evening) very soon.

Backstage models were dressed in beautiful clothes for the Tony Cohen fashion show. Make-up looked elegant but also tough and punky and matched perfectly with the jewel-tones of the dresses.

Custo Barcelona Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

Spanish label Custo Barcelona is back. After a few years of absence the womens label, from the two brothers Custo and David Dalmau, is trying to capture the European market with their bold prints and colors.

It’s absolutely clear, these two brothers are global orientated and like to travel. They get inspired by all the different countries they visit, the diverse cultures they get to know and the colorful and innovative prints they see along the way. And it showed in the whole collection. The Custo Barcelona women likes to go for a long journey and explore the world, but always in style. This time the label seem to be mostly inspired by the old, native Americans, like the Indians and cowboys. But they gave it a modern, luxurious twist, which results in a lot of mixed looks. We saw some faux fur mixed with woolen vests, camel hats, fringe and sequin dresses, rough leather jackets,  a geometric shirt (like a cape) with a printed picture of nature and tweed knee- high boots with patent leather moccasins details.

Between the splash of color, their trademark, and animal prints there were also some toned- down, desert colors like sand, dark brown and military green.

Although some pieces made you want to pack your backs and go travel yourself, most looks seem too much of everything. Too much different prints, layers, shiny fabrics, small details and bright colors used in one look. Less is more definitely doesn’t count for this collection.

Sage & Ivy Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

Friday afternoon we rushed from the Westergasterrein (where all the Fashion Week shows are held) to the Prinsengracht in center of Amsterdam for Sage & Ivy’s fashion show. It was held in a mirror studio which was full of classic mirrors from the 18th and 19th century. Together with some lit candles and soft piano music made up for a beautiful atmosphere. The perfect setting for showing the new collection, named Pelgrimage.

With this collection designer Alexia van Engelen showed a darker side of herself than she did with her previous collections. With her dark colored designs Alexia represented an almost spiritual quest through dark and mysterious landscapes.

The show opened with one of the strongest looks of the collection in a deep green shade (the color on which Alexia based her whole color palette). It had a beautiful silhouette and gorgeous details on the front and the back, which resembled a backbone.

It was followed by a long green (fake) fur coat, which Sage & Ivy’s new Russian customers will certainly approve. Skirts with peplums, delicate tops and a transparent dress were added to the mix. Two woven leather dresses, in brown and silver, looked stunning. As did the nude colored woolen dress and suit.

With a silk printed dress, a lace top with leather cuffs and collars and a tiny polka dot print Alexia turned a little more soft and feminine again. Not everything might have been very wearable, but we’re sure many of those designs will end up in fashion magazine pretty soon.

We quickly rushed back to see princess Maxima at the next Amsterdam Fashion Week show, happy we got a chance to see this one.

It’s all in the family: Jacob Kok

This edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week we focus at designers and their biggest supporters: their family. Where would they be without their mom, dad, brother(s), sister(s)and or grandma’s? They help finishing their designs, they drive the car, they cheer them up and cry emotional tears. The next family we would like to present is Jacob Kok and his lovely cousins Marte and Anne. Cool having an uncle like him!

Marloes Blaas Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

Today Marloes Blaas showed her fifth collection named A Common Silver Spoon, based on a Dutch saying (Geboren met een zilveren lepel in de mond).

Marloes used the theme literally by making actual spoons into necklaces. They were the perfect details to her strong wintery collection built around the after war period.

“In other collections I used to look at the forties; this time I focused more on the fifties, a prosperous period in which everyone seemed to be doing well. It was a time of solidarity, working together and large families. Especially those family portraits intrigued me. I started looking and old photo-albums from my mother’s family (she grew up in a family of 12 children). People used to really dress up in their best clothes. They didn’t look at all like themselves, but they did put a lot of effort into those pictures. I used bits and pieces of looks from that time and translated them into something modern”, Marloes told us.

She showed a total of 20 looks, divided into 3 pairs. Marloes: “In the first part jewelry plays a big role. I used real silver spoons and made necklaces out of them. The clothes in this first part are heavy, dark and are made in shades of grey and black. 2. The second part of the collection is more tough. For this part I studied old school pictures. They inspired me to come up with several school uniforms and school bags. 3. For the third part, which is more about the reconstruction after the war,  I used my own print with rocks. It has shades of burgundy and sand in it.”

Most looks were strong and very wearable. Especially the coats and the knitwear were beautiful. We still have some doubt about those thight high camel and pink colored pants, but everything else turned out great.
