Ado Les Scents Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

Though Hyun Yeu chose quite a somber theme for his collection (it was inspired by the book 1984), it turned out more positive-spirited than we thought. He designed beautiful solid, menswear items. Well-tailored (fitted) pants, shirts and coats.

Yet like in most menswear shows for fall 2012 we’ve seen so far a big part of the collection was about the suit. They came in shades ranging from lightgrey to black, as did most of the collection. Towards the end, as the music changed from a monotone sound to a more cheerful tune, Hyun added some color (a red checked scarf a pair of pants and a coat).

The designer might have felt a little down energy the last few months, but with a collection like this, he can be a happy man!

AFW FW2012 LAB-show: Jivika Biervliet & Sarena Huizinga

Today it’s not only about the big boys in fashion, but also about celebrating new talent. And that’s what the LAB- shows are for, where new and young designers get a chance to show their talent and introduce themselves and their work to the big audience.  The first two designers to kick off the day were Sarena Huizinga and Jivika Biervliet.

Jivika Biervliet
As a young student she had no clue about once becoming a fashion designer. And look where she is today, showing her collection for the first time to a big crowd. And she’s more proud than ever. ‘This collection really feels as my very own.’ Graduated as a menswear designer at the Utrecht School of Arts in 2010, she worked herself up as a true fashion designer exploring menswear in every aspect. ‘Designers seem to be more cautious designing for men. But in my work I just really want to push the limits a bit.’

Today she showed her collection called Forever Young, which was about the child inside of us that will live forever. The theme resulted in soft colors and big and playful elements, like jackets covered all over with stuffed, fluffy hearts and a shirt with such a long sleeve you could skip with it. She also used the most gentle and warm fabrics like wool, fleece and faux fur that made remind you of the good things of childhood.

Sarena Huizinga
Graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts The Hague in 2008 with a great collection, Sarena Huizinga showed already the great potential she has.  The last few years she developed herself as a true knitwear specialist, well known for her high quality knitwear characterized by the industrial seamless knitwear combined with traditional handcraft. Something she has not only discovered and learned at school, but also from her mother. ‘My mum used to knit a lot and it made me really curious. What I like about knitwear is that you can really explore and develop the competence. It’s not only about structure and color, but also trying out different seamless shapes.’

She already showed once before at the Amsterdam Fashion Week, during the 2008 Lichting- show, and now she’s up for the second time. Her current collection is called Wickedland, inspired by soft toys like dolls and stuffed animals and used these playful elements in her designs. Like marching-girls wearing bunny ears on their caps or an alpaca dress revised with thick woolen ruffles, inspired by a Spanish doll she once got. Not wanting the collection being too sweet, she added some leather details to give it some edge. There was even a small surprise during the show: a little kid walked down the runway in the cutest little knitwear suit with little bunny ears on his head.

Impressions of AFW FW2012 Day 1

The first day of Amsterdam Fashion Week is a fact. Highlights of yesterday were the opening party, the Sjaak Hullekes-show and the Bas Kosters-show, with the launch of his magazine Extra Kak and a performance of the designer himself.

Bas Kosters Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

On the first night of Amsterdam Fashion Week Bas Kosters blew us away with his spectacular show and performance. He started off playbacking (into an old telephone) to his own song, surrounded by five crazy dancers. Then his show started.

The influence of his sponsor for the night, phone company Vodafone, was clearly visible throughout the show. A fantastic mix of songs which involved telephones or calling (Lady Gaga – Telephone, Anita Ward – Ring My Bell, to name a few) was played. The song were interrupted a few times by a lady from a phone company saying something like: “We’re busy right now. Please hold the line” at which all models stood still.

Fashion wise it was a collection as crazy as ever. Telephone prints, letter prints, fluffly and fringed items came by. Bas designed printed leggings, long (dress-y) hoodies, structured pants and belly revealing tops. A black dress which had his face printed on it looked stunning due to the color combinations. The other prints just looked joyful and fun.

It-girl Valentijn de Hingh closed the show in an larger than life black and white printed dress with matching hat, wow!

For about twenty minutes we all took a trip to the Bas Kosters universe. In his own way the extravagant designer turned his Amsterdam Fashion Week show into one big party. Cheers to that!

Fashion Brand Ado Les Scents will show it’s fall/winter 2012/2013 collection on today at 1.00 PM. Designer Hyun Yeu spoke with us about his brand new collection and how he came up with his inspiration.

Title
“The name of my new collection is 1984, after the book written by British writer George Orwell. In this book he focuses on the Western world in the year 1984. People work in factories and live a said, colorless existence. This became my inspiration for the show.”

Hard work
“I came up with this 1984 theme, since I was having a lot of down energy. After years of working in the fashion industry I realized everything is really difficult. It is very hard work and sometimes fashion also feels like a factory, in which everyone is just making a small part.”

Collection
“I translated this down energy through monotone clothes, with hardly any identity. All items we designed look very similar. I used lots of black and grey and just a little bit of wine color. The collection is really about what menswear actually is. We will show about 22 looks. Since we have been to Florence and go to Paris right before the show our collection is already completed.”

Joy
“Though my inspiration is not so cheerful, I am very much looking forward to the show. I love showing my work to a broad audience and I like the vibe at Amsterdam Fashion Week. I enjoy working with a great team of models and hair & makeup stylists; it makes me feel fashion is alive. When we prepare for the show I also want everyone to have a really good time. Backstage preparations is not work for us; we are just enjoying. It’s like a holiday to us.”

Today Collectie Arnhem presented it’s new collection designed by a group of ArtEZ students. Their designs came with bold stripes, enormous ruffles, sequins and neon colors. Male and female students walked the catwalk to the loud beat that was played in high heels and bright stocking. They wore pants with enormous legs, wide tops and long stiff dresses. Their faces were neon colored and they wore bright caps. It felt a bit like a circus but we certainly got a positive vibe from it!

Take a look backstage at Collection Arnhem. Colorful water-paint underpinned the collection which was the students vision on the nearby future. Rollers with pink, green and blue paint were rolled over the faces; eyebrows, lashes and nails got matching colors too.
