Tonight was Zheng Zheng Li’s Amsterdam Fashion Week debut. And the Chinese-born designer, who studied in Paris and achieved his Masters in Arnhem certainly wowed the Dutch audience. He presented a flawless menswear collection which had all the right ingredients in it. Musthaves like the white shirt, black pants, blue suit, grey cardigan and waistcoats all made their way onto the runway. All still perfectly wearable pieces, but with a surprising touch. Like gold details, baroque prints, an extra belt, a subtle slit or a certain piece done in a few inches shorter than you’d expect. Polka dot socks and shoes added to the uniqueness of the looks as did animal masques on the back of the models’ heads. Such a joy to watch.

In times like these, it doesn’t always feel right to just show a collection of pretty clothes only the wealthiest people can afford. Sometimes, you need to be able to make a statement with fashion too. Yesterday Edwin Oudshoorn already presented us with his torn down world instead of his usual happy ever after. Today Aziz Bekkaoui had something to say too. He seemed to be making a political statement by using what looked like a Palestine flag print as the main print in his fall/winter collection. On socks, skirts, tops, blouses, dresses, beanies and backpacks; it popped up everywhere! Aziz’ message was all about love; a little reminder of what life should actually be all about. The show opened with the sound of a heartbeat, Aziz named the collection United Hearts Now and used heart shaped prints, embroideries and necklaces on most of his looks. Now his message might be political, the show had a cheerful feeling nevertheless. Old school hip hop songs by DJ Manga and the models’ funky styling made sure of that. As did the bright pops of color. Green, red, burgundy, pink and blue were all in the mix with the black & white graphic (pied de poule and jacquard) prints. Glass and wool, cashmere and silk. Urban danced with classic. Loose shorts, polo shirts, chunky knits, short sleeved vests and the models’ cool attitude brought everything together. Oh and not to mention those white sneakers. The fashion world wouldn’t be the same without those and Aziz knows all about it.

Suprematism; Said Mahrouf’s collection, which kicked off the second day of the Amsterdam Fashion Week, was all about primary colors. No doubt about it. With white as a starting color Said slowly added more and more color and shape. Mostly dresses in white and blue, white and green, white and red. They later on got a little more playful with touches of black and small colored details (around the pockets). The silhouette was long and lean, the fabrics supple and airy. Every design was perfectly tailored and sharply cut. Yet in a way that there was still was room for some draping and folding. Always in a subtle way though. Said perfectly kept his focus throughout his collection. The models sleek hair was pulled back, nothing to distract us from the solid color coordinated pieces. An impressive, perfectly balanced and steadily built up collection. Although it would be nice to get to see a Said coat, jumper or skirt too. In other words: we want more!

A world collapsed offered the most beautiful backdrop at the closing show of today’s opening night. From piles of dust Edwin Oudshoorn angelic models appeared. In their hurry to escape, when it all came tumbling down, they were able to put on their most beautiful dress and grab a chic suitcase with their most important belongings. Perhaps containing some more fairy tale like creations? Not a bad idea.. The girls looked elegant, chic and maybe even a little out of this world. Floor sweeping gowns had floral applications, raffia embroideries and airy ribbons. Forties style in the mix with Japanese kimono silhouettes. Wide sleeves, asymmetric skirts and jackets that appeared to be sculpted. Silk, tulle, crepe and wool in shades of black, coral, burgundy, gold and grey; the summit of delicacy used on some of the most fascinating robes. Indestructible fashion pieces one simply can’t leave this world without. A return to home.

In 2013 she graduated from ArtEZ. That year she won the Frans Molenaar award and got honored for the designs she created for fashion label Chloe. Milestones leading up to Liselore Frowijn showing during Amsterdam Fashion Week for the first time today, during the opening night! Ten looks portrayed her colorful and graphic vision for fall. Chunky (ski attire inspired) knits and airy fabrics alternated each other in a playful game of both covering up and exposing. Inspired by the Triadisch Ballet of Oskar Schlemmer, so the show notes read. No. 3 Formania, officially a story of the contemperary’s generation need for harmony and order, and surely a joy to watch.

Five years ago Erik Frenken started his adventure; he set up his own fashion label Avelon. Today he celebrated the brand’s anniversary with the presentation of his F/W collection. A video of his latest Paris fashion week experience, showing Erik’s journey, kicked off the show. A show full of rich designs inspired by wandering nomads. Knitted slouchy dresses, burgundy leather pieces, graphic printed skirts, ethnic chic cardigans, sheer tops, floaty dresses, baroque skirts matched with Avelon shoes. A-line silhouettes visible in most of the designs combined with feminine fitted waists, fur skin wraps, oversized blankets and chunky knits. Lots of diversity in materials and prints made this collection versatile, almost like an overview, a mix of styles. We’re glad Avelon returned to Amsterdam Fashion Week for this special occasion. A lovely collection to look forward to.
Collectie Arnhem Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2015
Just before the offical Amsterdam Fashion Week opening night the ArtEZ students of Collectie Arnhem managed to squeeze in a little collection presentation of it’s own. A sober presentation based on the idea that everything and everyone is a grid. Numbers, letters, data, dataflow! Personal data arranged through algoritms which resulted in surprising silhouettes and use of fabrics.
Models walked in the room to the sound of a loud beat, some carrying their own sound. The prints on their looks, which were both matte and bright colored, made out of letters and numbers. Innovative materials made up for refreshing silhouettes and even some sound effects with every step. Bare legs, cutouts, sleeveless tops, sun caps and lots of floaty transparency gave the collection a summer kind of vibe. While heavier jumpsuits covered the models up. Grafic lines and geometric effects, on the backdrop and floar too, added a sportswear feeling. Summer-y, sporty or chic; these pieces will find their way into the right wardrobe.

Down the escalator the models went. That Louis Vuitton trick never gets old. It made up for a spectacular entrance as the collection did the rest. In a sea of blue/gray-ish shades and a touch of yellow this year’s AMFI students presented their interpretation of Carefree like a Sunday morning. And carefree it was. Slouchy tops, baggy pants, nothing at sight that wasn’t comfortable. Robe-inspired coats with a big hug factor, a quilted skirt and cape seemed to be made from a sleeping bag. The models’ hands were either hidden under enormous sleeves or carried in the pockets. Heavy knitted socks in leather loafers had the same easy going appeal. Oh those Sunday mornings.. when you can just hide in your pajama’s or carelessly walk around in your underwear. Just comfort food and your favorite TV series. No make-up at sight, except of course from the beauty essentials print that popped up on a few pieces. The Individuals by AMFI students know just how important wearability and comfort really are in fashion nowadays. And with a fall collection as cosy as this one, who could resist?
