Tommy Hilfiger presented a preppy, but less loud spring-collection. No outsized florals like other designers showd, but men’swear checks and subtle shirting stripes. There were some bright motifs in orange and blue, pink and green in Mod-like cuts and sometimes with matching element like swimsuit, skirt, bag and shoes.

Swimwear was an important theme, but there were plenty of shirts- and T-dresses, bi-color raincoats and soft knits.

Thakoon Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2012

Thakoon Panichgul went multiculti again for spring. This time around, it was an ordinairy  bandanna that stimulated his fantasy.  When he studied its pattern, the paisleys led him to India. The cross-cultural exchange produced a super-vibrant collection of searing turquoise, saffron, orange, and gold, in silhouettes that ranged from Western shirts to shirts and dresses embroidered at the neckline. The metallic trim on saris provided a recurring motif.

Golden bands encircled the hem of a mini, the legs of khakis and lightweight denim jeans, and intervals on a long trapeze dress. Topping everything off were two-tone cowboy hats and blue sprayed hairdo’s.

Diane von Furstenberg Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2012

The theme of Diane von Furstenbergs collection was ‘Beginnings’, and referred slightly to the anniversary of 9/11. “It’s bout light and what light can do and how light changes everything” she said to reporters. The designer started with white, and opened the show with her signature wrap dress. Not slinky but in crispy cotton with a full circle skirt. The rest of the collection was inspired by modern Africa, with lots of layers, textures, elegance and vibrant colors. There was also a bit of retro glamour in the collection, looking at the hair of the models (beehives), circle skirts, beaded dresses or tomboys in tailored Bermuda shorts and blazers.

DKNY Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2012

Donna Karan’s spring collection was all about the American woman. So strong, confident American girls appeared in front of an all American backdrop (a yellow cab parked in the streets of New York). They looked sexy but it didn’t look like they were trying to hard. Their clothes looked airy and easy going, but the outfits didn’t seem too careless.

Prints, bright colors and the masculine/feminine theme were three main aspects of the show, all presented in a matchy matchy way (wedges, bags, floppy hats and clothes all in the same ‘theme’). All American shades like white, blue and red were mixed with a touch of pink, nude and green.

It was not the most mind blowing collection we’ve seen, yet everything seemed perfectly wearable for today’s American women. So by the time the sounds of Lenny Kravitz’ ‘American Woman’ filled the room, we’re sure every girl attending the show had already put a favorite item on her wishlist.

Derek Lam Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2012

Derek Lam’s spring 2012 fashion show looked modern, streamlined and fresh. With a focus at print and cut. You could trace his Californian backround to the clean, architectural lines of the skirts, the sunny desert colors and a modern riff on the retro men’s wear look of a color-blocked shirt and cuffed straight-leg jeans. But the show was more about snappy sportswear with crisp, minimalist polish and a distinctly American look. Tunics and sweaters were belted over A-line skirts; there were utility and tank dresses.

The label Helmut Lang is back. Brought back to life by Nicole Colovos and her husband Michael. Richard Serra was the inspiration for their ss2012 collection, with lots of black, white and bright yellow, draping, layering and angular hemlines.

The couple worked five years at Helmut Lang and this is their first catwalkshow. In the meantime they’ve built a real business on the consistency of their clothes’ cool, urban vibe: lots of black, lots of leather, a sharply cut blazer  and slouchy T-shirts.

Alexander Wang Catwalk Fashion Show New York ss2012

You can leave it to Alexander Wang to translate streetwear to high end fashion. No one does it better than he, it’s original, fresh, dirty, gritty and yet still feminine.
Wang has worked with athletic references before (athletic chic seems one of the early trends at New York fashion Week so far), and for his ss2012 Wang used motocross and BMX racing as his references. He opened with laser-cut mesh bombers, mini skirts and shorts, all black with a tight, neon polo peaking out.

The models marched out with hands through the sheer pockets for a sporty Surrealist effect. Then came ombré floral prints, blue and gray with a Hawaiian flavor, on utility gear (a dress with oversize zip pockets; cargo pants worn with a mesh bustier).  Leggings and track jackets looked like full racing suits with striped paneling and contrast color insets and they fitted like second skin.
As for accessories, there were pointy pumps made from the exotic skins of tropical fish, floral bike helmets and cross-body bags that looked like golf club bags and weren’t much smaller.

Prabal Gurung Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2012

For his sumer collection Prabal Gurung brought sweetness and bondage together. Inspired by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki he came up with a gorgeous sensual flower print that he used in most of his designs. It was there on his dresses, shorts, skirts and pants finished off by dark lines and edges.

Apart from the vivid print there was a lot of sheerness too. Dresses had cut-outs in all imaginable places and transparent fabrics were used to cover up arms and legs. Gurung used sequins, lace, latex in shades like turquoise, purple, white and black.

His models looked confident, sexy and tough, just like he intended to. Yet it felt like there was a little too much going on at once. He might have pushed the boundaries a little too far with the dark edges, the sheer fabric ánd the cutouts.

But that surely won’t stop front row Nicki Minaj from wearing his designs; she is all about taking her outfits to the next level and not giving a damn.
