Milan Catwalk Fashion Show fw2010: Versace

Alexandre Plokhov, design director for Versace menswear, took the new movie ‘Tron Legacy’ as inspiration for his fall-collection. The result was a vision of a futuristic world, but also back to Gianni Versace’s days of hard-edged metal mesh. This was agood show, sharp as a laser beam and glossy. Plokhov modernized Gianni’s original ideas, giving the black leather a bursting-bubble decoration and weaving metal mesh into vests or as shoulder pieces. The neon-patterns on shirts looked like tie-dye leaking, but were all digital.  These were often mixed with sleek suits in cyber blue.

Catwalktrends ss2010: showstopping shoes

The designers gave the models a hard time walking the runway to show the spring/summer collections. The shoes they had to wear often had eye-catching shapes and heights.

The shoes in the Jil Sander show had iron pins for heels. Donatella Versace used platform shoes. John Galliano’s shoes were extremely high and his stiletto heels seemed to be made of colored pearls. Chanel introduced a few clogs.

Some models in the Dsquared show had spikes all over their shoes. Viktor & Rolf embellished theirs with pink flowers, Vivienne Westwood decorated hers with wings. Matthew Williamson’s shoes had bows.

Next to the ultra high shoes we saw ultra-flat sandals (Issey Miyake, Anna Sui, Valentino, Lacoste, Etro, Armani, Chloe). Those sandals, snake leather and wearing socks in open shoes seem to become the trends for this spring.

Of course the Alexander McQueen shoes were real showstoppers. His shoes were high, had crazy alienated shapes and had reptile prints all over them. Gaga oehlala…

Vivid pastels, geometric prints, baroque curlicues, short-short skirts, and slinky, sexy chain mail: Where else could this be but Versace? For Spring, Donatella Versace was telling everyone who went backstage that she’d been inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (which comes out next March). “I loved the idea of that fantasyland,” she said. Really, though, you didn’t need to know that to appreciate the fact that this was Versace redux—the Gianni heyday of the early nineties retooled in a gloriously confident way.

It’s Christopher Kane’s new task to bring life back into Versus, the second line of the Versace-house which was hot in the nineties. The models were being placed on plinths to display the 25 wool, lace, and laser-cut neoprene dresses Kane has designed for his debut.  Donatella Versace herself was walking around looking over the group of black, mushroom, and sizzling red dresses. One dress was detailed with slashes held together with pink, red, and green aluminum safety pins—a reinvention of the dress that made  Elizabeth Hurley famous in 1994.

For her SS2010 collection Donatella Versace told everyone she was inspired by the idea of a fantasyland. This inspiration was visualized by the use of bright pastels, many different prints and plastic see-through materials, which all gave a barbiedoll-feeling to it. A lot of dresses and skirts were shown, sometimes combined with a jacket. There were also some very slim pants, looking more like leggings. Because of the different geometric patterns some of the dresses seemed to be a combination of a skirt and a top, stitched together. The legs of the models looked endless on the runway due to the fact that the girls wore platform shoes and ultra-short skirts and dresses. There was also a lot of leg shown wearing the evening gowns with a very high slit and silver metallic accents. Altogether Donatella Versace showed off a vivid, youthfull, sexy and indeed fantasy-like collection. (Tess van Daelen)

The new Versace-menswearcollection screamed lightness and luxe. Designer Alexandre Plokhov mixed elements of army-uniforms with a more exotic style. Result: a striped navy-jacket over a djeballa, an officer’s shirt – without sleeves – in a gauzy silk cheesecloth, or a parka in translucent cotton. Exotic too were the python and tortoiseshell-prints and jewelry that looked like it came from a Tuareg market.
