Trend Report – Warm Winter Accessories

Unfortunately a warm camel coat is not enough to keep you warm this winter. You’re gonna need some winter proof accessories to go with that too. We selected the best warm winter accessories straight from the catwalk:

  • A knitted scarf, the thickest one you can get.
  • A pair of long leather gloves.  According to Gstar, Carolina Herrera and Moschino the best ones are blue this season, but you can choose any color you like. Just take a colorful risk and try to have fun with it.
  • A nice fur detail, perhaps on your collar, bag or shoes.
  • A hat, cap, turban (very trendy) or headband, anything that keeps your head warm and prevents your ears from freezing off.
  • A pair of hairy snow boots (you don’t wanna ruin your suede heels).

The rule for wearing these accessories seems to be: the bigger the better. Especially Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Galliano went over the top with their enormous hats and overload of fur.

We can feel that winter is just around the corner. The days get darker and colder, so we’re really beginning to need our winter wardrobe. And what better way to stay warm than by wearing a piece of chunky knitwear?

Especially knitted vests and cardigans are a big trend this season. Choose one with a cable knit of a nice winter print. And if you can, buy them in an extra long version. That way you can wear them with jeans as well as leggings. Besides you can wear a small belt on top to make your look extra feminine and elegant.

Check out our photo selection to see how Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana and Marc Jacobs worked this chunky knitwear trend into their F/W2010/2011 collections.

Highlights Milan Fashion Week SS2011

With the beginning of Milan Fashion Week the colorblocking started too. All big Italian fashion houses were in the mood for brightness. It started off with Gucci, then Prada, Missoni and Jil Sander followed.

It also became clear that the clothes were becoming more and more comfortable. The silhouettes were elongated and looser than before, the heels less high. That is, perfect clothes to lounge in next summer.

Oh, and one other trend: fringes and tassels as details on any possible item; dresses, bags, tops, hats, shoes, skirts and jackets. Major!

Gucci
The Gucci show was a great example of colorblocking to the max. The models looked glamorous from head to toe in their colorful designs, perfect leather pieces, shiny accents and numerous items with playful tassels. Like Marc Jacobs’s show in New York Gianni opted for a seventies vibe too. Yet the outfits of the sexy Gucci ladies were a bit more body-tight.

Jil Sander
Seemed to continue the colorblocking vibe the brand had launched during it’s menswear show in June. Simons used green, pink, yellow, violet and orange in one outfit and called it ‘a mille-feuille of color’. There were a lot of stripes too. The first few looks were made of large, floor-sweeping skirts and white tees. They made the models appear larger than life, but still looked elegant. We were impressed.

Bottega Venata
No colors at Bottega Veneta, but shades of black, white and grey. The silhouette was very loose letting the body shape almost completely disappear. Items like shirt dresses and suits made gave the collection a manly touch, without becoming less elegant. A great wearable collection from look 1 to look 41.

Roberto Cavalli
At Cavalli we celebrated forty years of an amazing, glamorous fashion house. Cavalli held a great show and a just as impressive after party. His spring/summer collection, which he presented in an area full of gigantic tropical leaves, was revealing and sexy. He came up with croc and python jackets and dresses with fringes all over the place. A perfect glamazone collection with all the right Cavalli ingredients.

Prada

Colorblocking, banana & monkey prints, stripes and Mexican hats, that is Prada SS2011 in a nutshell. Miuccia herself called the collection brave, bold and obvious. And only a designer like herself would be able to pull off some of these looks. The designs were often over the top, but there’s no doubt Prada will set some new trends for summer. The show immediately became everyone’s favorite and surely was one of the highlights of Milan Fashion Week.

Catwalktrend FW2010: winter florals

The last couple of months floral prints were a big hit on the streets. The flower power trend we expected was picked up big time and was perfect for summer. Now fall is on it’s way designers have introduced a new floral print. This time it is less bright and even more classic.

You could call them winter florals; they look nothing like the frost flowers from the winter knitwear, but certainly belong to the upcoming season.

Deep, dark hues decorated coats, pants and dresses. They added the right amount of print and color to a fashion season that is so sober and minimalistic.

Our absolute favorite winter florals were those of Kenzo. They had a great seventies feeling to them and looked romantic and trendy at the same time.

Catwalktrend FW2010: a taste of toffee

A little bit of mocha, a hint of cacao, a slice of hazelnut, just a drop of caramel and some toffee. Those are the ingredients for a whole new trend, that we’re gonna see a lot this fall: light brown shades.

The different hues of brown looked splendid in their multiple variations, from beige (almost nude-colored) to chocolate brown, used on any kind of material.

Overall this trend was seen on the more sophisticated and minimalistic clothing in which the models looked very elegant.

If there’s one best way to wear the toffee trend it’s by combining the different shades into one outfit. Gianfranco Ferre, Salvatore Ferragamo and Chloe sure proved that. Even their accessories, small belts, hats and bags, came in a light brown shade.

So, if you’ve already picked up the camel coat we discussed earlier, you can easily upgrade it to this brown shaded look. Just ad some brown leather gloves, a belt & a hat and you’re good to go!

Catwalktrend FW2010: Graphic Prints

Digital graphic prints, Peter Pilotto made them into it’s signature technique and has a lot of success with it. Even Michelle Obama wore several pieces of the brand. It’s digital prints are always very vivid and colorful and are inspired by nature’s element like water or the sun. For fall the designers drew their inspiration from seventies interiors.

Often though, graphic prints aren’t based on anything. Their just beautiful figure- and color combinations printed on a certain fashion item.

Apart from Peter Pilotto, Matthew Williamson creates gorgeous prints as well. The short, printed cocktail dresses and long evening gowns he designs, always are true show stoppers.

Unlike floral prints and animal prints, graphic prints often look very modern. They can even look kinda spacey when printed on a black background. The most beautiful examples are printed on satin or sheer fabric. It makes the clothes look expensive and the women look elegant.

We think all women wanting to look modern and hip should have at least one graphic printed cocktail dress of her own.

Catwalktrend FW2010: All that glitters…

After so many season of hearing navy or grey being the new black, this year’s new black comes as a surprise. Gold is the new black for 2010/2011. Though it’s not a very common color for winter, it certainly is a big trend.

It popped up at Balmain, Moschino, Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana and Pucci. At Balmain it matched perfectly with the whole baroque-theme and all the purple.

Moschino combined it with black. Rosella Jardini designed a golden fringe coat and decorated a black one with lots of golden (ear)rings.

Dolce & Gabbana showed golden headphones for your i-Pod and used small golden coins as emrbroideries on their clothes.

Donatella Versace mixed all kinds of metallics in her collection. Even her pants and bags had metallic pieces on them.

So, everyone saying gold looks cheap and trashy should keep their mouths shot for at least half a year. Cause it’s the trend. And even if it’s fake, it’s still fashionable.

For the winter of 2010 all that glitters IS gold.

Catwalktrend FW2010: the lammy jacket

Besides military men, pilots are an inspiration for fashion too. Especially their pilot jackets are huge this year. Black or brown leather combined with natural colored lamb’s-wool make up for a winter musthave: the lammy coat.

At Burberry the pilot coats were strong-looking with large, think lammy collars. The models who wore them (combined with skirts and high boots) looked confident and cool.

Lamb’s-wool is not only popular on jackets. We saw it on hats and boots (fashion brand Ugg makes all it’s boot with lamb’s wool) as well. Fashion label Hermes even introduced a lammy Birkin Bag. And Hussein Chalayan amazed everyone with his lammy binoculars.

One thing’s for sure. If we’re gonna have a cold winter, the lammy will be your best friend.

Catwalktrend FW2010 – Black leather

Black leather, it can look so sophisticated, yet it can appear very nasty & gothic as well. For fall, both examples were shown on the catwalk.

More than any other color leather, black was by the world’s top designers. Often total looks were created out of black leather. So the models wore coats, capes, hats, pants, gloves, dresses, skirts, belts and shoes of black leather.

Alexander Wang made it look grungy, at Moschino it was cool and Hermes used a croc-version. Ann Demeulemeester gave it a Gothic touch, Dior’s was girly and at Dsquared the black leather was worn by Dominatrix.

It’s clear you can go create many different looks with just this one material. On the catwalk it all looked great, yet when walking down the streets fully dressed in black leather, you’ll soon be judged. Our advice is to mix & match your leather with other pieces, so you won’t come across as some leather fetishist.

Catwalktrend FW2010: his jacket

Your man’s pants, shoes and jackets are no longer safe next season. ‘Cause chances are you’re leaving the house in them. Especially the masculine jacket is an easy, stylish fashion item you can throw over almost any look. Whether you combine it with a cocktail dress, a pair of pleated pants or a pencil skirt. You can never go wrong with your man’s jacket.

The so called boyfriend jacket was already popular this summer, yet for fall it has become even manlier. The shoulders have broadened and the length has increased.

At Sonie Rykiel the jacket was part of a suit and seemed to belong to some kind of giant. Preen, Dries van Noten and Bottega Veneta showed large pieces as well. Also, quite a few designers opted for a double breast version.

In case you’re afraid to look too masculine in these jackets we have a few tips to make the jacket appear more feminine:

  1. tuck or roll up your sleeves
  2. wear nothing underneath or at least something with a low v-neck (like Michael Kors showed on the runway)
  3. wear a small belt over your jacket, around the waist to accentuate your silhouette.
  4. add accessories like a brooch on the collar of the jacket
