Marloes Blaas Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012
Today Marloes Blaas showed her fifth collection named A Common Silver Spoon, based on a Dutch saying (Geboren met een zilveren lepel in de mond).
Marloes used the theme literally by making actual spoons into necklaces. They were the perfect details to her strong wintery collection built around the after war period.
“In other collections I used to look at the forties; this time I focused more on the fifties, a prosperous period in which everyone seemed to be doing well. It was a time of solidarity, working together and large families. Especially those family portraits intrigued me. I started looking and old photo-albums from my mother’s family (she grew up in a family of 12 children). People used to really dress up in their best clothes. They didn’t look at all like themselves, but they did put a lot of effort into those pictures. I used bits and pieces of looks from that time and translated them into something modern”, Marloes told us.
She showed a total of 20 looks, divided into 3 pairs. Marloes: “In the first part jewelry plays a big role. I used real silver spoons and made necklaces out of them. The clothes in this first part are heavy, dark and are made in shades of grey and black. 2. The second part of the collection is more tough. For this part I studied old school pictures. They inspired me to come up with several school uniforms and school bags. 3. For the third part, which is more about the reconstruction after the war, I used my own print with rocks. It has shades of burgundy and sand in it.”
Most looks were strong and very wearable. Especially the coats and the knitwear were beautiful. We still have some doubt about those thight high camel and pink colored pants, but everything else turned out great.
Jacob Kok Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

At Jacob Kok we all received a flashlight with which we could look for treasures in his new collection, named treasure hunting. Inspired by mineworkers Jacob came up with dusty looks with special glittering details that functioned as special minerals and crystals; the treasures.
Jacob showed strong jackets and funky pants in washed off colors. Though the looks were well made, we could tell Jacob has more of a passion for details and fabrics. He chose and developed (at the Textielmuseum in Tilburg) gorgeous thick fabrics with unique prints, matching his show theme.
Let’s hope for Jacob there were some interested fashion labels at his show. We already feel a nice collaboration coming up.

Elise Kim Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012

Vietnamese designer Elise Kim made her Amsterdam Fashion Week debut on Thursday night. Sponsored by Dutch magazine Grazia she presented her collection Epiphenomenon (part 1 of a trilogy).
The show was all about the moment we start te fall asleep. A surreal abstraction of the moment we loose control of certain securities. It was in the music, the designs, the colors and the styling.
Kim showed white suits, dresses and coats with beautiful fur details on the sleeves and shoulders. Especially the mix of light transparent fabrics (organza, silk) and the more heavy, winter-y materials (leather and wool) made the designs unique.
On long, slim and feminine designs the color palette ranged from white and nude to black and deep blue. And the added embroidered sequins and self-designed print made the looks extra special.
It was a strong collection and Elise probably made a good impression on many of the Amsterdam Fashion Week visitors. We can’t wait to see what she has in stores for us the next two collection (also part of the trilogy).

Individuals Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012
On a catwalk full of black confetti tough models appeared to the sound of howling wolves. They wore masks, hoodies and scarves around their heads to cover their faces. They even wore scary wolf masks to match the music.
Their looks were dark and grungy, but there was more than enough variation in the outfits. The collection named “Duals” included asymmetric dresses, coats and fur vests.
In a fast pace the models walked the runway in designs, which throughout the show gradually changed from black to light grey and sandtones. They looked like they were wandering in a lost city, like urban nomads.
Besides the collection Duals individuals also presented a limited edition collection book filled with passion and power. In this book individuals is seeking answers to questions about the time in which we live.
Ado Les Scents Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2012
Though Hyun Yeu chose quite a somber theme for his collection (it was inspired by the book 1984), it turned out more positive-spirited than we thought. He designed beautiful solid, menswear items. Well-tailored (fitted) pants, shirts and coats.
Yet like in most menswear shows for fall 2012 we’ve seen so far a big part of the collection was about the suit. They came in shades ranging from lightgrey to black, as did most of the collection. Towards the end, as the music changed from a monotone sound to a more cheerful tune, Hyun added some color (a red checked scarf a pair of pants and a coat).
The designer might have felt a little down energy the last few months, but with a collection like this, he can be a happy man!
