The opening-show at the third edition of Fashionclash Maastricht 2011 opened with a fashionprocession, to illustrate the relationship between the creativity of fashion and the religious background of Maastricht. The procession was followed by a collection of black & white folded and pleated garments made by the 2nd year-students of the academy if Fine Arts in Maastricht called Blast. The finale was called Rash and the collectiond seemed inspired by fantasy, science fiction and maybe a part Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz (?).
It surely made a remarkable fashion-moment.

Graduation Shows 2011 – ArtEZ Arnhem

On thursday night, right after Topshop was opened in Amsterdam, Arnhem became the fashion hotspot again. There the fashion crowd (and many moms, dads, brothers, sisters and friends) gathered for the graduation show (one of a total of 5 shows!!) of 22 ArtEZ students. In a warm, sold out and fully packed show area, which is part of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale, we witnessed one and a half hour of some great ArtEZ fashion.
The collections of all 22 students couldn’t be more diverse. From childrenswear (Cleome Clements) to minimalistic (Sanne Schepers)- and survival (Jarwo Gibson) wear, from skinhead styles (Tom Nijhuis) to asymmetric items (AnneMarie Keizers) and from on trend fashion (Zonia van Uden) to over the top, structured designs (Annie Bosman); a perfect mix of signatures and styles.
ArtEZ seemed especially proud of talents like Linda de Jong, Anne Bosman (structured menswear), Mattia Akkermans (bright designs, crazy styling), Magnus Dekker (a collection made out of flags) and Sanne Schepers.
Linda de Jong presented some extraordinary selfmade fabrics. She showed a lot of knitwear and even used plastic in some of her Chanel-inspired designs.
Another great collection was made by Sanna Schepers. Sanne showed skirts and tops, which were scecretly attached to each other. Her designs looked simple, but in fact were made out of some difficult constructions.
A graduation student who really stood out too is William Tan. His designs (he showed so many looks) were perfectly tailored and his prints were stunning.
All these students proved they have a clear vision of their own style and potential. They also know how to turn 6 or 7 looks into a collection, which not everyone can.
ArtEZ received a Grand Seigneur this month; a corpus award for people/companies in the fashion industry and judging from some of the great collections we saw this award was well deserved.

Beauty Trend Report SS2011: Artistic Hair

This season the greatest fashion houses proved that you do can more with your hair than just wear it in a ponytail or a bun. The most artistic hair creations were shown on the runway.
Like the Byblos curls on top of the models’ heads, the braids at Erdem, Ungaro and CNC, or the old fashioned hairdo at Prada. Not to mentions the basket-weave hair at Alexander McQueen and the gold-sprayed curls at Dior.
Every season new hairdo’s are created by the best hair professionals in the world. Hours and hours are spend on the most artistic styles. Of course a lot of extensions, weaves and other kinds of fake hair are needed, but the result is always flawless.
A good hairdo really does complete a model’s look and besides colors, shape and print of the clothes it is often also a hairdo that can remind someone of a certain collection. And besides all that these hairstyles are a lot of fun to watch!
Beauty Trend Report SS2011: Big Hair

This trend you might not want to use in your every day look. Yet every once in a while big hair can be pretty great. Reminiscent of the eighties big hair is all about texture and volume. And the only three things you need are a curling iron, a bit of volumizing mousse and some good old hairspray.
Create natural big hair looks like Sarah Jessica Parker and Cheryl Cole did very recently. Or go over the top with a cotton candy like coupe.
If you’re not blessed with lots of hair, apply some extensions or try backcombing your roots for extra volume. We’re pretty sure the beauties in our gallery below are no big hair naturals, but they sure made their looks work on the runway. So, get your curling irons ready for this trend…BIG TIME!

During the Arnhem Mode Biënnale Dutch Design is well represented. You can, for instance, take a look at some of the designs Klavers van Engelen and Iris van Herpen made.
A design made by Iris van Herpen is placed within the exposition as a fountain. The design (A/W 2011) already told a great story on water and now this story is visualized even better.
Klavers van Engelen showed their airy designs, brought to live by small windmills, making the dresses dance with the wind. Their question: “Wanna Dance Amber?”

Team Peter Stigter went on the streets of Arnhem to teach thirteen photographers the tricks of good streetfashion photography. After a short lecture at cafe Dudok in Arnhem they left with one of our photographers to catch some fashionable and interesting dressed people. It wasn’t easy – Dutch like their casual style – but the result was promising.
Arnhem Mode Biennale 2011: Young Designers

The installation Prologues shows you the work of 22 different young designers. They are uncomprimising, ingenious and resourceful. They make the fashion they want to make without thinking to much about the wearability. With this installation Amber wants to celebrate this attitude and not let the designer’s creativity be stopped by commercialism.
You’ll see designs of Central Saint Martins students next to designs of Bas Kosters and Marryme-JimmyPaul.
