Highlights of Menswear Milan SS2012

Summer 2011 has just started and we’re already on our way to 2012. Milan menswear-shows brought us some new trends. Not any BIG news really, but shifts in menswear go slowly and rather invisible. Much talked about shows were the Prada-show, with Miucca’s take on golf and all the rules, rituals and codes that belong to that world; the Jil Sander show and Raf Simons’s new black and the Versace-show which looked like an homage to the old Gianni-times. But the seven main trends – besides the wider pants, longer jackets and absence of ties – so far in Milan are the return of sportswear, blue as the new favorite color, bold prints, new checks, tribal-elements, the motor-jacket and the playboy as the new icon.
Sportswear
With the Olympics starting next year in London, it seems a lot of designers are finding inspiration in sportswear. From the tongue in cheek-golfwear from Prada to the fencing-game at Moncler Gamme Bleu. In between you’ll find references to tennis, swimwear, running and sailing. You’ll see it in the color white, the shirts, shorts, the blue and red stripes, the shoes and pants.
Blue
Every kind of blue came back in different collections, there were even designers who presented a whole collection in this color. It’s commercial, it’s fresh, it’s suitable for a lot of men and it’s the color of independence, trust and ambition. And in the world of today men can use that.
New Checks
If you’re not into those new bold Versace-esque prints you can always turn to the good old fashioned checks. Well, old fashioned – designers gave them a new look, twisted them, rearranged them and came up with a new version. And they love to mix them together.
Bold Prints
Ready for some new, bold prints? After the color-blocking from this summer, the Versace-esque print will be the new next thing to show off. And nobody does it better that Donatella Versace herself. Miami here we come!
Tribal
Tribal influences are not really big, but they surely will spice up a suit or jeans – and that’s what menswear needs right now. And when Christopher Bailey of Burberry uses them, you know a trend is born.
The new playboy
Skinny boys were replaced by playboys with a real body in Milan last week. And fashion also embraces the new playboy in the way he dresses and empasizes his body.
The short jacket
With the playboy comes also the short jacket, that accentuate the torso and leaves room to the hips and legs. It also adds a younger touch to an outfit, as long as it’s in leather or plain, minimal cotton. The padded version of Prada seems only suitable for small, skinny boys without a six-pack.
Giorgio Armani Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012
The Giorgio Armani ss2012 show had a lot of ingredients that popped up in other shows this week which set the mood for next spring. First of all the color blue, then the new suit with wider pants and longer jackets, followed by the short (motor)jacket and the return of sportswear. The only thing we missed were the bold prints and colors – but these don’t belong to the image of Armani. Well, except for the checkboard-print we noticed at some knitwear and shirts.

Dsquared Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012

Today Dsquared twins Dean and Dan took us on a European summer vacation. They showed us Denmark, Greece (the island Mykonos), Italy (Florence) and England, by presenting pictures of those places as backdrop, that is.
In every European destination we came we were presented with another way of dressing, all of them styles we’ve seen before at Dsquared. There was the outdoor man with his lumberjack checks, the handsome (and very bronzed) beach boy in his tiny swimwear, the sharply dressed holiday man (in modern suit jackets in multiple shades) and the party boy (dressed in shiny tuxedos).
It was a nice trip and there surely was a lot to see. The clothes all looked very wearable and commercial and the mix of colors was fun. Any guy will be able to pick up something he likes in this collection, yet we were not really surprised by something new or refreshing.
Dean and Dan couldn’t be bothered with that concern; in the afternoon they were already celebrating the launch of their new perfume with a large group of international press.

Versace Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012

It looks like it’s time for a true, classic Versace revival. Not only because of the Versace-inspired show of D&G, also because of the ss2012-collection Donatella Versace sent out yesterday AND the news that she is signed on to be Swedish fashion giant H & M annual guest designer. The collection -launched at nov. 17th in 300 shops around the world – will look back at the Versace-heritage with lots of leather, color, prints and vivacity. For the first time there also will be a small home-collection. Donatella was wearing one of the dresses yesterday when she entered the catwalk after the show.
Maybe that explains the ss2012 collection, full with old fashioned versace-prints, play-boys, and suits that closed low to emphasize the torso. Other elements of those heydays were the baroque-print and lots of buckles. The swirling curlicues that were a Gianni signature reappeared in black and white, across jeans and silky blousons, decorating the bath-robes that were once every well-dressed pool’s accessory of choice, and as the tone-on-tone pattern on a sheer mesh shirt. The buckles decorated leather trouser legs, and as closings for jackets. Colors varied from chrome yellow, grass green, cobalt, hot pink and vermilion.
Here’s the official announcement of the Versace for H&M collection:
Alexander McQueen Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012

You need a true British designer to add some rock ‘n roll to the Milan menswear Fashion Week. After days of decent suits, sportswear and pale colors, the Alexander McQueen-collection brought wit, romance and the expressionism of Mick Jagger and David Bowie to the catwalk, although it lacked a bit of McQueens’ own provocative and edgy elements. There were Savile Row jackets in bold black & white checks or peacock shades, as well as the loose trousers in candy red & white stripes or hammered satin. Burton also presented varsity-style jackets in leather and suede, a flame-print evening jacket and a white coat with bold red spray-effect bands.
Etro Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012
No Etro without the ethnic prints and today was no exception. Mixed with checks, stripes and florals they formed a gorgeous contrast for many of the easy to wear looks.
The relaxed spirit came from the loose fits of the clothing as well as the ‘messy’ styling (lots of layering and many untidy shirt collars).
Colors changed from pastels to brights and camouflage and were beautifully picked together. Some of the outfits might have had a feminine touch to them but together with the accessories (straw hats, leather loafers and big bags) it looked just right.
The quality of the clothes was truly visable and the models looked impeccable.

Pringle of Scotland Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012
The Pringle ss2012 collection was the debut of designer Alistair Carr. He took the British label took into sportier territory. He fragmented the argyle weave for sweater vests, mixed paper-thin leather and knitwear for jackets and shorts, and made “twinsets” out of coats with linings that matched models’ T-shirts. Al very fashionable and young. Pringle also presented a collaboration with Puma: part Chelsea boot, part sneaker.
D&G Catwalk Fashion Show Milan SS2012

The D&G- ss2012 show brought us back to the years that Gianni Versace reigned men’s fashion with his large foulard-prints. But the designers at D&G went a bit further, they not only used the prints for shirts, they also mixed them with denim in pants, showed them on bermudas, hats, suede moccasins, jackets and T-shirts. And every which way and loose, loose being the operative word for flowing shirts, low-crotch pants and roomy swimming trunks. We’ve got the message indeed.
This is the last D&G collection before it is integrated with the main label. So we’d better enjoy it.
