Five master design students of ArtEZ institute of the Arts Arnhem presented their highly personal visions on fashion in an intimate presentation yesterday at the Atelier Néerlandais. Labelled “Arnhem Masters in Fashion”, the 16th generation of the institute proved that an impactful presentation is not reserved for big catwalk shows.
In a small-scale and multidisciplinary presentation, fashion designers Haesung Bong, Anja Dragan, Nathalie de Koning, Sunanda Koning and shoe designer Chrissie Houtkooper deployed innovative ideas for the future of fashion. In the corridors of the Atelier Néerlandais, the audience was served new flavors of the designer’s fashion propositions, with a strong emphasis on expressive handmade textile innovations and tactile qualities, in ongoing presentations ranging from group installations and a video projection to perpetuate catwalk movement.
Mark van Vorstenbos, head of the department: “We’re proud to present a new generation of fashion designers in Paris, historically considered the heart of the fashion industry, in a refreshing way. The current system is in need of more personal visions, so we chose to show the collections in an intimate way. Up-close, personal, inviting visitors to give the garments a second or third look.”
The ArtEZ fashion design master aspires to educate fashion professionals who from a highly personal fascination, critically interrogate their own unique handwriting as fashion makers in relationship to the current design discourse to seek out both their relevance and their additional value through research and design. With Arnhem Fashion being founded over 60 years ago, the cultural heritage is enormous. Being positioned outside the fashion establishment, each student is offered a wide open space to explore and develop his or her own refreshing idiosyncrasy.
Fashion and Opera, behind the scenes
Sunday afternoon the fashion concert was presented by the Dutch National Opera & Ballet and fashion designer Zyanya Keizer. They provided a unique afternoon where opera and fashion came together. The guests were invited for an exclusive look behind the scenes at the costume-, hat and shoe studio of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet. A magical moment for fashion lovers.
Menswear London Catwalk Fashion Show FW2015
First up on the Fall/Winter 2015 menswear circuit was the London menswear fashion week. The most obvious trend was the strange resurgence of the 1970s, this time filtered through a hint of ’90s revivalism. With flared trousers, Bay City Rollers tartans, and Evel Knievel allusions. Still many other designers also picked up the autumnal color palette, shearling outwear, and raw, pale denim that defined that decade, often showing them in a slimmer, slightly more wearable iteration. An renewed exploration of wide, loose trousers, and a continued emphasis on plaid or tweed tailoring also marked the shows in London, as did references to the era-appropriate pop prep of British artist David Hockney.
Here are some highlights.

For the second time Amsterdam was the capital of denim, by hosting The Kingpins Show. Kingpins started out in 2004 as a tiny denim supply chain show for denim pro’s tired of the mad scramble and soul-deadening crush of handshakes and “who are you’s?” and badge-checking at the huge, impersonal sourcing shows that dominate the industry.
The idea was: keep the exhibitor-list tight, invite only the best brands, serve tasty food, treat everyone like family and create an atmosphere that’s conducive for networking and relationship-building. It worked out pretty well.
The second edition in Amsterdam was a success. Also because of the first Global Denim Awards, won by Jonathan Christopher.
