Dolce & Gabbana Menswear Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2013

The models’ looks couldn’t have been more different from each other today at Dolce & Gabbana. Long bearded men walked to Milan show next to some very young fresh faced boys. No seasoned models, but all guys and men (protagonists) hand picked by Domenico and Stefano because of their Sicilian roots. Because once again the Sicilian designers focus on their heritage and origin.

It is all about devotion for fall/winter 2013/2014. Absolute devotion to tailoring, devotion to cut, devotion to fabrics and devotion to details when it comes to the clothing. And  devotion to family, devotion to religion and devotion to love when it comes to the vision behind those clothes.

And all that devotion surely paid of. The (more than 80) protagonists looked impeccable in the classic creations. Dolce and Gabbana opted for inevitable winter shades like black (for coats, suits, velvets and cashmere), grey (for coats, suits, T-shirts, vests and embroideries) and white (for poplin shirts, inlaid shirts and for lace pillow-style embroidered jackets and shirts). Yet they added rich colors at the end used on jackets and silk T-shirts printed and embroidered with flowers. A few religious icons here and there, but the designers wisely said goodbye to last season’s Blackamoor imagery.

Costume National Menswear Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2013

Today Ennio Capase almost sent out a completely black colored collection. But, proving the power of black in fashion, there was more than enough to look at. Capase paired tough with chic by mixing leather pants with woolen coats and by giving other coats extra biker details, like multiple zippers and strong leather collars and panels. Extremely tailored jackets and classic hats added to that contrast. Touches of white and blue cheered up the collection, but it didn’t change the long haired models’ bad-ass mood. They were perfectly dressed rock ’n rollers on a mission.

Jil Sander Menswear Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2013

For her second menswear show (and the start of Milan Fashion Week) since her return Jil Sander did what she does best. She sent out perfectly tailored clean looks, often done in only one shade. Like the completely red or pinstriped suits even worn with matching shirts underneath.

Models looked warm and cosy in check printed coats, sports jackets, and big woolen sweaters with large collars. The six sleeveless chic looks seemed less appropriate for winter, yet did stress Sander’s vision.

Violet, burgundy and army green spiced up the grey color palette. Bands placed on chunky sweaters made up for a fun detail and plain duo colored tops might just be it for upcoming winter.

Streetstyle Trend: Classic Camel

Some trends start on the streets, others begin on the catwalk. The camel coat is one of those catwalk wonders. From MaxMara and Chloe to Gucci, Hermes and Michael Kors; it was in every show a few seasons ago and now it’s a big streetstyle trend. Models, bloggers, editors, photographers; everyone is sporting the classic coat look. And we can’t blame them. Those camel coats look both soft and warm and go well with just about anything. Pick a XL version and you’re joining in on the oversize fall trend as well. Wear it big or tie things up with a small belt around the waist. Just keep it classic and you can’t go wrong!

Trend Fall/Winter 2012/2013: Go Green!

We guess the forester is our latest trend setter when it comes to this look. Wearing deep green shades from head to toe really ís one of fall’s hottest looks. Hermes, Dior, Burberry Raf Simons and many others proved next to black, white and burgundy you don’t really need any color in your wardrobe. Match your shirt, tie, hat and pants like Dior or play around with different nature inspired shades like Cerruti. Go shop for green (both color-  and sustainable wise).

Trend Fall/Winter 2012/2013: Cape Fearless

It definitely is a fashion piece for style daredevils. We didn’t name it cape fearless for no reason! Yet if a guy knows how to wear this latest fashion trend well, he’ll immediately jump to the top of this year’s best dressed list. It’s rather difficult, we have to admit. There’s a fine line between looking like a magician or a fashion forward trend setter. Just take some inspiration from Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Roberto Cavalli and Calvin Klein and see if you’re up for it.

Trend Fall/Winter 2012/2013: The Man Purse

It’s out with the totes, weekenders and backpacks and in with the purses and clutches. For men, that is. Costume National, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and many others showed some slick examples of pretty manly purses. For man to carry underneath their arms or just to hold in one hand. Some would fit a laptop and an agenda, other looked perfect for an i-pad or just a fashion show invitation (yes, you need a bag for that!). In any case, the bags still looked manly enough. Leather materials, large belts and buckles did that trick. And though that little brown bag Jil Sander introduced might not look like a purse at all, we like it anyway.

After it became a massive hit in the streets designers are all working with burgundy now. It’s a shade that perfectly works for both men and women and can be either street chic or formally fashionable. Leather, velvet, satin or wool; the possibilities with this winter color are endless. Big labels like Salvatore Ferragamo, Hermes, Jean Paul Gaultier and Gucci showed just how versatile burgundy is and definitely put this shade on the fashion map for 2012/2013. Alexander Wang for Balenciaga

For five years now Alexander Wang (28) has kicked off almost every single fashion season as one of the first designers to show during New York Fashion Week. Since 2007 the young designer has managed to generate raving reviews and created a solid international fanbase of people crazy for his sportswear inspired, edge creations. Wang has high profile fans all around the world; from Rihanna to Olivia Palermo and12 own stores even though the fashion house is still a family business.

And while the success of this young label continues to grow, Wang is taking on another challenge at Balenciaga (and will travel between New York and Paris to do so). As the new creative director of the Parisian fashion house Wang will follow in the footsteps of Nicolas Ghesquière, who left the house last month after 15 years. A new designer potentially means the start of a new Balenciaga era.

With Wang on board the French label might be able to reach a wider audience, create more selling points and perhaps even better price points. And maybe Balenciaga, which has been high end and exclusive (even the number of catwalk photographers allowed at shows was extremely limited) since it was founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1937, could use a bit of Wang’s American commercialism. Even though the label did very well with Ghesquière as it’s designer.

There’s no doubt Wang will do a great job as Ghesquière’s successor. But, what can we expect?

The sporty elements and the mixing of materials will stay, no doubt about that. Wang, who is already going through Balenciaga’s archives, might start experimenting with more colors and prints, something he never really did for his own (very black-oriented) label. We might start to see more of Balenciaga’s heritage brought back to live. Clothing may become more approachable once Wang’s extraordinary streetwise twist is added. And perhaps the thirties fashion house will get a modern touch up (even though this winter’s out of the blue galaxy prints were pretty futuristic) in order to reach a global audience.

Yet the CEO of Balenciaga’s parent company PPR, François-Henri Pinault, already stated not a whole lot is going to change: “The challenge taken by Alexander, which I really liked in discussions with him, is for him to express his talent in a different situation for another brand with its own DNA, and he’s absolutely excited with that.”

One thing’s for certain; his first autumn/winter 2013/2014 shake up is going to be a good one. And we can’t wait to take a sip from this Balenciaga-Wang cocktail.

Let’s take a look back on some of Wang’s most outstanding designs in the gallery below.
