Liselore Frowijn Backstage Catwalk Show Paris SS2017

It’s always exciting to watch the mayhem backstage at a fashion-show. Dutch designer Liselore Frowijn presented her collection for the second time in the capital of fashion yesrday. We checked what went on behind the scenes.

The SS17 collection ’SAGOI’, is an homage to an old canal house in Amsterdam with beautifully contained ‘Delft Blue’ tiles dated 1667. Liselore Frowijn has interpreted the iconic hand-painted ceramics by tracing them with her signature style, both painting the illustrations directly on silk and using blown-up graphics in bold overall prints.
The illustrations display mythical scenes of an escape to a pastoral lifestyle of farmers in the Dutch 17th century. Research on these tiles’ topography brought Frowijn to the Japanese island of Kyūshū, where Dutch-Japanese exchange started around 400 years ago. Liselore Frowijn visited the Japanese island this summer to work with local artisans in the indigo-workshops on developing several textiles and implementing techniques that have been used for decades.
Next to the abstracted pastoral scenes, the pieces feature nude figure drawings inspired on the traditional Japanese Shunga erotic woodcut prints, combined with flower-dessins from the Mantero archive. With additional screenprinted graphic layers of blown-up Japanese masks, shibori-indigo dyes, woven kasuri textiles and Delft Blue paintings, the entire collection embodies the story of two worlds meeting once again in intermixed cultural traditions.
Using the tunic as a base piece, the collection has grown into a semi-couture extravagance of where each look presents a new layer and playfully stacked bold prints. Each garment can be worn as a canvas depending on your mood, with a dazzling richness in combination as a result, balancing on luxury-couture and sporty details. The woman Liselore admires embraces the unknown with a sweltering sensuality and as you imagine the Amsterdam house, she takes you to an idyllic realm where two worlds collide.

Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture Fashion Show FW2016

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren have kept everything from their old collections, even the leftover silver sequins from the collection that won the Dutch duo top prize at the Hyères festival back in 1993.

They repurposed those sequins, and scraps from collections across their career, for their fall couture collection, weaving their own fashion history into rag-rug embellishments on vintage trenchcoats, military jackets, sweatshirts and denim.

Their impulse was sustainability — and to challenge themselves to create something different from fragments of the past. There were bits from their “Blue Screen” and “Van Gogh” shows — fall 2002 ready-to-wear and spring 2015 couture, respectively.

Beyond the fabrics, the silhouettes referenced past Viktor & Rolf shows, particularly the bulging finale coats, recalling their “Russian Doll” collection.

The sweatshirts and military jackets were marvels of jutting ruffles and twinkling patches of vintage buttons and errant crystals, the patches repeating on cropped jeans and khakis. The show reached a dramatic crescendo with a clutch of trenchcoats that morphed into full-skirted ballgowns, scraps of tulle tinted into delicate dégradés.

The white gown that capped the display also winked to Viktor & Rolf’s next move: A collection of wedding dresses to debut in October during New York Bridal Week.

Iris van Herpen Haute Couture FW2016 Backstage

It was an unforgettable and magical show/presentation yesterday at Iris van Herpen in the l’Oratoire du Louvre, an 18th-century Protestant church. The Dutch designer stood her models on concrete plinths as Japanese musician Kazuya Nagaya brushed his golden Zen bowls, producing pings and drones that reverberated through the space. That magical vibe was also created by the use of thin fabrics and special textiles used fro frothy and ethereal dresses in the palest colors, the simplest a long sheath resembling morning dew on wet skin. We took a close look backstage at the show.

ROUND UP PARIS MENSWEAR SS2017

As much as it was a grande celebration of fashion outside the shows (have you seen our Paris streetstyle images yet?), we of course arrived in the city of love to soak up all of the latest designer collections. After having witnessed all the highs and the lows it is now time to recap. And as far as we can tell SS2017 is going to be a summer of practical style. Extra pockets, tiny bags that come in handy, boiler suits and trenchcoats; items that clearly serve a certain cause, make up for some of the biggest trends. How designers translated that into stylish yet effortless summer wear? You’re about to find out in our 7 SS2017 menswear trends recap.

One for your keys, one for your phone, one for your cash money, one for your notebook and one that fits your lip gloss; fact is you can never have enough extra pockets. You know it and Givenchy, Hermes and Moncler Gamme Bleu definitely know it. Next summer we love them big and up front. Who needs a handbag anymore?

Utilitarian or not; boiler suits are a thang for next year. No more outfit stress with this onepiece; this fashion item will take you anywhere you need to go. From grocery shopping to bar hopping. Balenciaga, Hermes and Louis Vuitton already showed you how. Shaggy or chic; hand in your pockets and just give it a try! Again: enough pockets, so leave your man bag at home.

Fendi, Balmain, Balenciaga are all joining a good game of power dressing for SS2017. Suit jackets you can live in with shoulders that reach the sky and overcoats that easily fit your partner in as well. We have to admit Balenciaga gave us some Frankenstein creeps at first, but after that oversize red velvet suit (that made us crave some red velvet cake) we got a hang of it. From tight tanktops to XL suits; next summer is all about extremes.

Streetwise and super safe; if you got your game on, you wear your tiny shoulder bag on your chest. The boys in the hood have been doing it for years and now Givenchy, Moncler Gamme Bleu and Louis Vuitton are picking it up too. Just make sure you have a casual flow to match your it bag and you’ll go from tourist freak to ghetto chic.

The trenchcoat. It’s the only coat you’d wanna wear during summertime. Of course keeping notice you prefer not wearing any coat in summer at all. It’s flattering, practical and timeless. And even though the trenchcoat has never really been gone, designers (the likes of Dior, Dries van Noten, Louis Vuitton are bringing back this trend big time now. In classic camel or exotically printed; the trench effect in full swing.

Blending in is hot this season and it will still be one year from now. That is, if we follow up on Givenchy and Dries van Noten’s style advice. Both brands are bringing camouflage prints back to the table. Yet, the camo has certainly received an update. Mixed with other prints in the same color palette is the way to wear this army (war?) inspired print in twelve months. A camouflage mix, so to speak.
