Stella McCartney Catwalk Fashion Show Paris FW2011

Stella McCartney brought a strong, restraint, homme/femme collection to the audience. She not only played with sexes, she also played with surface and contrasting volumes. The show began with rippled organza cocoon tops in black and blue tucked into pencil skirts or trousers their full sleeves and voluminous shapes in contrast to the slim tailoring below the waist.

Then she sent out  oversized blazer dresses with exaggerated shoulders in brushed cashmere and roomy cable knits over loose trousers and pale sneakers with zips at the back. But she didn’t forget the sensual side of women, especially when it comes to eveningwear. Chiffon panels snaked around the sides of body-concious black dresses to make them even curvier.

She also seemed fond of a large polkadot-print,  having them onto sheer dresses or down the sides of sexy catsuits. She played with modern textures too, creating xl cocoon coats from gold felted wool and bonding dark blue velvet to scuba fabric for even sleeker tailoring.

Givenchy Catwalk Fashion Show Paris FW2011

The Givenchy fall-collection was tacky, sexy, mature and elegant at the same time. The black panther played a major role in the collection as it appeared in print, hats and cut outs. It felt unexpected and striking but also uncomfortable, but in a sens it was intriguing too. It was a vibrant print, the black, gold and deep violet gave it a rich character – they sometimes morphed into a baroque print.

The clothes however were rather classic and feminine: pencil skirts, blazers and buttoned-up shirts done in shiny black silk, leather and velvet. It was the way they were presented plus the panther that gave it all a kinky edge. A variation on the strong silhouette were the sheer, narrow skirts worn under ruffled minis. Often the look was finished with a black fur or leather baseball jacket.  Beautiful, feminine pieces were the blouses done in pink embroidery and a cropped sweater in fluffy yellow mohair.

Steffie Christiaens Catwalk Fashion Show Paris FW2011

It doesn’t happen that often that a young fashiondesigner – notably from the Netherlands – gets a spot at the official calendar of the Paris Fashion Week and is able to give her first show in the middle of that week. Steffie Christiaens came out of the blue and presented her first collection on sunday.

Her concept is clear and explained at her website:

One windy day whilst filming a cherry tree covered with netting, Steffie Christiaens discovered the elemental inspiration that would form the unique beginnings of her experiential design process.

Steffie captures the effect of wind, water, heat and light upon archetypal garments and fabrics, harnessing the distorting chemical and physical forces of nature. Through her photographs and 3-D studies, she transfigures these ‘natural accidents’ into liberated, provocative designs.

Christiaens’ organic shapes flow over the body like waves, intuitive of the human form beneath. Maintaining an artisanal approach to more experimental garments, the collection delivers a balance between a structure rooted in Futurist spatial forms and a fluidity of relaxed elegance.

After graduating at the Artez Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem Steffie Christiaens went to Balenciaga and Maison Martin Margiela and was chosen as a finalist for the festival Hyeres. A promising designer. Let’s hope she will be able to maintain and succeed. Her debut-collection was the first, big step.

John Galliano Presentation/Show Paris FW2011

It should have been a presentation of the John Galliano-collection, but instead it was a small show in a small setting. Even Sidney Toledano,  the chief executive of Dior, which also invests in the Galliano brand, was there. Maybe as a signal of support for the staff members of Galliano’s atelier. It must have been strange for everybody who was there today, being there after such a difficult week following the scandal John Galliano got himself into.

The collection that was showed was – according to Cathy Horyn of the New York Times ‘fairly straightforward and typically Galliano, a mix of romantic dresses, a loosely draped mint kimono with black lace appliqué, a black vinyl trench and a silk halter dress printed with what appeared to be curlicues of cigarette smoke’.

Hermès Catwalk Fashion Show Paris FW2011

After big names like Jean Paul Gaultier and Martin Margiela, Hermès chose a less more well known designer to create their womenswear-collections. But not a less talented one! Christophe Lemaire (45) has been in the business for ten years, building his own brand and helping to give sportswear-related brand Lacoste a more fashionable face.

His first collection for Hermès was a mix between comfortable yet dressy sportswear and the loose layers we know from the late seventies. Chunky knits, tweeds, leather pants (sometimes with boots attached to it), straight T-shaped leather tops and beautiful coats and deux-pieces in a patchwork of the famous Hermès-shawls. The tunics and  and djellaba-inspired dresses gave it a slightly eastern touch. Colors ranged from off-white to black, mustard, petrol and orange.

Different from what we’re used to see from Gaultier, but still luxurious and elegant in a quiet way.

First View Paris FW2011: Dark Romance

The last few days in Paris a fantastic myriad of hybrid creatures passed by in a theatrical scenery. Mysteriously clad in dramatic silhouettes in exuberant fabrics and tailoring.

Rebellious and gothic, Amazonian warriors in black clouds of silk slung with giant leather belts. Haider Ackerman showed the most magnificent and elegant approach towards this dark witchcraft in dense burgundies, deep sapphires and intense forest green.

Black boots accessorize dresses and coats in silk, velvet, leather and fur. This feel for dark romance is wide spread on Paris catwalks.

Stylespot is a collaboration with Stijlinstituut Amsterdam.
