Jil Sander Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011

Raf Simons sent out another strong collection for Jil Sander. Coming fall it’s about streamlined ski-wear with a classic early 60’s twist and – again – couture-inspired volumes. In bright colors but also darker ones, like forest-green and blue. And in thick, dense fabrics, even puffed up like down.
The collection focused again on cut and shape. Simons started from the couture sensibility of spring but with a Sixties vibe. Ski-pants with hooded sweaters with ski-motifs opened the show, followed by waffled knits. Then came the big clothes, cut in dense, solid, bold-toned fabrics with considerable self-structure. Simons added more volume with a broadened dropped shoulder that fell into folds in back. He used this technique for coats and dresses, sometimes with loose half-belts in front or back.
It was not an easy collection. But new fashion is never easy to congest and accept. But someone has to stir up things and Raf Simons is doing a good job. he started the whole colorstory that’s filling the streets at the moment. And the next change is volume and proportion. It’s just a matter of time.
Bottega Veneta Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011

The collection of Bottega Veneta was about color, textures, proportions and a very feminine, grown up image of women. The program-notes said the collection was something “between restraint and exuberance.”
But this collection was more about fabric development, this fall with a deliberately weighty, homespun feel for daywear, often in bold colorslike dark pink, mustard, pale yellow, orange and deep red. It looked inviting in thick tweed wools but a bit itchy on mohairs. The look became ladylike thanks to Sixties retro hairdo’s. The coats were minimalist and skirts were above the knee, with off-white stockings and high heels. Some of the other looks included jersey tunics and blousons — like sweatshirts – and very simple dresses in black-tinted white silk overlaid with black lace.
Versace Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011

The Versace-show gave a slightly baroque feeling due to the enlarged motifs at dresses. Lots of white, black and dark-blue, and a little red and green. Donatella Versace kicked things off with military precision — a black admiral’s coat with bold, gold buttons that was as chic as it was streamlined. Then came the LBDs, sharp and angular in silhouette, and more jackets and coats in the season’s soldierly vibe. To both, the designer added a pretty baroque motif of large-scale swirling floral scrolls in bright purples and yellows.
The pleated skirts and jackets, cut from hard, thick leather, worked the pretty side of tough chic while a long white coat sported patchworked fur sleeves. And if Versace showed fewer eveningwear contenders than usual, no matter. The sexy goddess gowns she did send out, with bondage-y busts and gentle feathered trains, were striking.
Etro Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011/2012

At Etro we were once again pampered with delicious bites, the best drinks and free Etro pillows. The baroque prints of the pillows perfectly matched the winter season, as did the prints in the collection. Veroniqua Etro’s inspiration for her ethnic prints this time came from antique carpets, tapestries and embroideries.
The prints were slightly faded, as if they were aged by time and could be found on wrap dresses, pencil skirts, oversized scarves and dresses with tuxedo jacket silhouettes.
Raw jewelry, like sharp edged earrings, sword necklaces and silver buckles were the perfect finishing touches of this collection. A collection full of pieces which women of any age would love to work into their wardrobe.

Antonio Marras’ show was inspired by his mother’s elegance, so a large picture of her featured as he backdrop of the show.
The models wore items his mother used to wear too, like vintage menswear jackets embroidered with sequins and feathers. But also little black dresses, belted cardigans and sweaters with corsages to make them more playful and feminine. They all breathed 50’s elegance.
During the finale all models appeared in LBS’s with polkadots and white starched collar.
Prada Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011/201

Mixing a swim cap with gigantic glasses and a double breasted black dress can be very sexy. At least, according to Miuccia Prada, who sent this outfit out on the runway as her first look.
The Italian designer again pushed the boundaries with her new winter collection. She wanted to make glamorous and sexy materials more innocent and fresh’, she told WWD. This resulted in a fun collection with an cartoon effect. No bananas and monkeys this time, but 60’s inspired dresses with eye-catching buttons. Some designs (with different fields in several shades) even felt very Mondrian-ish.
Miuccia’s models all wore gloves and held a snakeskin Prada bag in their right arm. Towards the end their dresses changed from nude and furry to bright and shiny. So if your Prada dress, gloves or bags don’t get enough attention; just try out the swim hats; you’ll look just perfect. 😉
D&G Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011/2012

The D&G invitation gave the whole theme of the show away. It was covered in colorful letters and so was the collection.
On the first few dresses the letters looked like graphic prints from a distance. Yet once the models got closer it was clear that it were rows of R’s, L’s, O’s en Z’s.
Hues of black, white and grey were spiced up by some colorful accessories (necklaces and bracelets with large letter hangers and bright bags). Then in came the neon colors; orange, yellow and pink. Stripes were mixed with the letters and underneath several cotton designs pieces of sheer fabric were visible. Together with some bright oversized blazers it all led to a young and funky D&G collection.
The finale was special too this time. Models appeared on the runway looking like ostriches. They wore puffy, frilly skirts combined with summery printed Tees. How we love those D&G finales!
Fendi Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011/2012

The new Fendi girl Karl Lagerfeld presented today was sexy and sophisticated. The kinda girl everyone notices once she stepped in the room. A girl with an outspoken way of dressing up; mixing bright colored (orange, yellow, red) tights with chic skirts and tight blouses with eye catching ruffles.
She loves wearing fur; as an accessory and used on complete coats. Not a day goes by without her wearing her headband or her structured handbag and oh my, does she love her enormous sunglasses.
The new Fendi girl has a look not everyone will immediately love, but she has her own style and knows what she wants. Hurray for that!
MaxMara Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2011/2012

We started our second day of Milan Fashion Week with the MaxMara show, as did actress Katie Holmes. The wife of Tom Cruise was chosen by the label as it’s new Face of the Future (an award for talent, style and contribution to the community at large). The brand, which celebrates it’s sixtieth anniversary this year showed a solid, slightly minimalistic collection.
Clean belted coats appeared in shades of white, nude, beige and grey. Leather skirts were combined with shorter jackets, blouses and sweaters. The dresses were simple yet sophisticated. Some pants were small like leggings, others were ultra-wide and even look like skirts.
Several evening gowns were made out of checked blankets (with sequins that added extra glamour) with kilt buckles at the side. Though they looked super soft and comfy, the models could hardly walk in them.
Besides the sequined checks and buffalo prints all looks were very basic, quite the opposite of all the colorblocking we’ve seen so far.
It was a classic collection, on which many modern women will want to get their hands on.

The Dutch press had an extra reason to visit the John Richmond show today. Dutch celeb Yolanthe Sneijder Cabau (wife of Inter Milan soccer player Wesley Sneijder) walked in the show. She opened and closed the show and worked the runway like a pro, even though she’s not a model!
