Rick Owens Catwalk Fashion Show Womenswear Paris FW2013

Owens chose a heavy theme for his fall/winter show. Battle-scarred heroism was the inspiration for his signature big coat, boots and T-shirt and a full range of black and white creations. His pale models with the frizziest hardo’s could be seen sporting kimonos, asymmetric tunics and coats with larger than life stitches (which were in fact created by traditional basket-weaving techniques). Large gloves, high standing collars and a few fur details accessorized the looks. Like so many designers Rick Owens opted for a Japanese influenced collection. Yet he managed to use this popular theme in a very unique way, inspired by his notion of heroic grace under pressure.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were the style-icons Dries van Noten referred to while explaining his collection. For fall 2013 he plays with masculinity and femininity, something he enjoyed in former collections too. That play is a subtle thread through the whole season, Instead of fur Van Noten pleayed with feathers. He mixed mannish white shirts with a navy skirt over gray flannel pants, That sounds rayther boring, but the effect was in the details: a necklet of paste diamonds, a skirt with a trail of ostrich-plumes anchored by crystal. There wwere also chunky knits, cable sweaters, varsity-stripe skirts, brocade skirts and plus-zize overcoats – all looking glamorous.  There was also a sexy vibe, not in your face-sexy but subtle.

Gareth Pugh Catwalk Fashion Show Paris Womenswear Fw2013

Inspired by the Asgarda tribe, a group of Ukrain warrior women who segregate themselves from the everyday world to become strong and independent the designs indeed seemed to empower as the models wearing them looked tough and confident. They appeared feminine and Victorian in Pugh’s long and lean silhouettes (in shades of black, white, grey and blue) with raised necklines and dramatic floor sweeping skirts. Structured leather and gold embroidered silk looked both Gothic, romantic and futuristic. Simple T-shirt inspired tops with chic pockets (a reference to the Asgarda women) added a new minimalistic approach to Pugh’s line. They formed quite the oppossite of the series of black finale dresses, which got a little more drama with every look. Who would have thought trash bags from a one pound shop could look this impressive?

Appearing from a marble staircase we met up with Marco Zanini’s girl for fall. A humble girl with a great sense of style. A natural beauty with not only a wonder wardrobe but great taste too. She gracefully matched a few over the knee skirts with quite stiff woolen tops and roomy coats. She pulled off a selection of oversize dresses with duo colored gloves to match. And she managed to look chic in a series of pleated New Look skirts combined with jackets and waist belts to accentuate her feminine figure. Even in her pj’s she seemed perfectly put together carrying her statement making rolled up leather bag. Her wardrobe’s warm winter shades (light blue, apricot and mallard green, baby pink and burgundy) looked ever so chic against her perfect pale skin. Zaninin’s girl isn’t trying too hard or following any trends. She is just being her fashionable self, rocking some of the finest Rochas investment pieces that will last longer than just one season.

Chanel Haute Couture Paris SS2013

At Chanel couture the feeling was fairytale like, yet scary at the same time. Dressed in perfect light shaded lace ensembles Lagerfeld’s models walked his path through the green. Their eyes dark and decorated with feathers, their faces hidden behind large droopy headpieces. They were classy ladies dressed in playful volume skirts and ribbon tweeds jackets. And how chic were those over the knee lace boots?! After hemlines dropped a few inches (midcalf length) and Lagerfeld added color in form of floral embroideries, evening dresses appeared both chic and dramatic. Evening dresses and two wedding dresses at the end that might just include Lagerfeld’s thought on the momentarily much discussed gay marriage in France.

Thom Browne Menswear Catwalk Fashion Show Paris FW2013

While blindfolded models hammering on a wooden construction formed the backdrop of Thom Browne’s fashion show, his walking models appeared from behind. The fact that they wore checked skirts and dress like designs could have been enough to keep us press interested. Yet Browne added an extra dimension to his looks, making them unique yet unwearable. His grey flannel suits, his cross printed vest, his checked pants and illusionist coat; they were all done in a boxy style. The effect of the square fits and the super stiff shoulders was even amplified by his square hats, rectangular sunglasses and geometric suitcases. Let’s hope Browne hat some real boxes hidden underneath his designs, so that when he removes those, he can actually sell some of these fall/winter creations.

Perhaps Donatella’s neon pink and yellow, gold and black looks breathed MTV Awards more than Oscars or Grammy’s. The dresses might be a little too bright and short for a haute couture show. Yet nowadays anything can be a red carpet look and there’s always some attention seeking celebrity (or their stylists fort hat matter) enthusiastic enough to pull this off. No Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley or Penelope Cruz perhaps, but we can totally see youngsters (and long term clients; smart thinking Donatella) Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez of Kirstin Stewart sporting one of these upbeat sexy creations. They’ll stand out from the crowd and with the 24-karat detailing still have everyone gushing.
