Roberto Cavalli Catwalk Fashion Show Milan Womenswear FW2016

Seventies rock, or Cavalli with a definite touch of Pucci, was Peter Dundas f/w2017 style of choice. His series of beautifully handcrafted looks presented in front of a brocade back drop were the ultimate, richly colored, mix of strong and sensual, feminine and flamboyant. Necklines low, waists high. Sheer maxi dresses paired with fur lined velvet coats. Shiny silk suits worn with skinny lurex scarves. Belted flared jeans and embroidered patchwork capes. A subtle touch of tiger here, some snake skin there; overall animal prints played a subsidiary part to the floral prints and baroque detailing. Italian craftsmanship at it’s best.

Gucci Catwalk Fashion Show Milan Womenswear FW2016

Our invite to the Gucci show that kicked off Milan fashion week was undoubtedly the hottest ticket of the week. Since Michele took over as creative director one year ago Gucci has become one of the most influential and trendsetting brands in the industry. An incredible accomplishment. Yet after rising to the top so quickly it’s even harder to stay there. Wednesday’s show proved Gucci is still all the rage, although perhaps Michele should be aware not to overdo his dress up game. For fall he again pulled from different eras to create the richest of looks. Seventies disco sandals and sequined dresses, eighties sunglasses and puffy shoulders in the mix with 18th century collars and 16th century bodices. An expressive mix of styles the designer referred to as “The Renaissance arrives at Studio 54.”. There was so much focus on detail it was almost too much to take in in such a short amount of showtime. The earrings, the (glittering) glasses, the turbans, the fedoras, the multi finger rings, the branded socks, the necklaces, not to mention the latest update of the highly desirable Dionysus bag. Graffiti artist Trouble Andrew created a series of G-prints that were used on ready-to-wear and accessories. All of which came together in a gorgeous fall proof palette of emerald, ruby red, soft pink and turquoise. Conclusion: fw2017 is a definite worthy successor of Gucci’s current hit collection.

While our own fashion capital was blooming last week, Milan too was the center of attention for all international fashion lovers as we were presented with the latest menswear collections for upcoming winter. And that didn’t go by unnoticed. Expect the usual dose of mind blowing collections, outspoken pieces and attending international superstars. In case Amsterdam fashion week kept you too busy or you’re simply looking for a 5 minute recap, here are the highlights of Milan Fashion Week, menswear fall/winter 2016.

1. Cameron Dallas causes a stir
Sure, we’re familiar with the photog frenzy outside certain shows. Especially when superstars like Kanye or One Direction make their appearance. Yet this season, at the Calvin Klein show, it was complete chaos. Screaming girls everywhere hoping to get a glimpse of Cameron Dallas. Who? Yep, make sure to remember his name. Cameron Dallas is a social influencer with, as it turned out, quite the following. So much for actors and rockstars at the frontrow…

2. David Bowie tributes
Luckily the rockstar spirit was still very much alive. Following David Bowies passing earlier last week some fashion houses even paid a little tribute to the rockstar (and fashion) icon. Giorgio Armani spoke about the singer’s Space Oddity in his Emporio Armani show with notes. At Gucci we spotted “Bowie” printed on the back of a jacket.

3. Gucci does it again
From velvet PJ’s to Snoopy references, from floral printed suits to embroidered beanies, from shearling-lined denim jackets to lurex tracksuits; Gucci once again made sure to be the talk of the town. Presenting a mix of diverse seemingly dated, yet refreshing rich designs, we could look at for hours. Also, actrice Hari Nef walked the show.

4. Gender Bleding
Which leads us tot he next highlight; so many shows included female models, turning the menswear shows into one big gender blending party. Antonio Marras, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Costume National, Giorgio Armani, Prada; are gender mixed shows the new standard?

5. The return of the menswear skirt
Lines are blurred more and more, that’s a fact. So, no we weren’t surprised to see the menswear skirt making it’s rentree on the runway at Dsquared. In fact, we’re excited. Floor sweeping and worn with a jacket. Let’s go!

6. Anonymity at Moncler Gamme Blue
Moncler Gamme Blue didn’t need to hire the prettiest faces. All of the male models in the show were anonymously hidden in the brand’s camouflage printed attire.

7. Into space
Giorgio Armani showed us the future. His show was opened by a bunch of snowboarders, followed by an extensive futuristic new collection. In outfits created with new technologies some of his models looked ready to board the nearest space shuttle.

8. Yellow fur Fendi backpack
If there will ever be a menswear it-bag next year it will definitely be the bright yellow fur backback by Fendi. Whether or not combined with the matching bomber; it’s a guaranteed head turner and wraps up what Fendi will be all about next year; soft, cosy and comfortable fashion.

9. Purple rain at Versace
And from one statement color to the next.. Donatella divided her sexy sportwear collection into several color schemes (silver, light blue, burgundy), ending with a surprising series of purple looks. Who knew men dressed up in lilac overcoats could look this admirable?

10. Italian tailoring at it’s best
Heavy (heavy!) leather, (boiled) woolen checks and a selection of velvet suits combined with the finest Italian tailoring had Tomas capture the perfect menswear mood. Long, lean, double breasted, skinny scarfs and sneaker-esque footwear. Bring it on!

11. Siberia proof
Long Johns paired with several labels of the thickest brown shaded fur had Domenico and Stefano creating the ultimate ‘walking your dog on a winter Sunday morning’- look. A nightwear inspired style that continued in the rest of their (Spaghetti) Western inspired collection, in the shape of silky pj’s worn with short leather jackets and woolen (gun embroidered) overcoats. Getting ready in the morning was never done this fast.

12. Bright & Wild
Statement colors and animal prints make up for the ultimate Etro f/w2016 look. Purple baggy trousers and oversized turtle necks paired with a cheetah trench certainly looked so very desirable. Meanwhile 17 year old model Luckly Blue Smith had hoards of screaming fans outside the Etro venue.

13. Sailor chic
Cropped trousers, XL capes and silly sailor hats determined Miuccia Prada’s collection for f/w 2016. One all about statement coats and fascinating prints by artist Christophe Chemin, that referenced historical drawings and paintings.

Giorgio Armani Fashion Show Milan Womenswear SS2016

Famous for his self-titled shade of ‘greige’ Giorgio Armani presented us with a rather colourful collection for coming summer. Navy and icy greige were given feminine touches of flame, lacquer, and geranium. Proof that it’s never too late (Armani has been celebrating it’s 40th anniversary) to shake things up a bit. The overall feel of the collection wasn’t necessarily different, but all creations did have an uncommon sense of lightness. One that made sassy cocktail looks (in the form of high waisted shorts, sheer tops and embroidered tailored jackets or see through billowy skirts and macramé tops) appear even more elegant. Fresh felt a floral printed red jumpsuit in contrast to some of the more classic Armani ensembles of long wide legged pants and red/white striped tops. Models may have been fully dressed, airy materials turned their clothing into the chicest fashion pieces. While transparency might turn out cheap or trashy in the hands of other designers, maestro Armani made his weightless designs highly desirable. Whether office bound or off to a fancy party Armani’s weightless spring summer attire will make sure you’ll float off to any occasion.

Dolce&Gabbana Fashion Show Milan Womenswear SS2016

How many times can you reinvent Italy? And how many times can you redefine Italian elegance and bravoure? As many times as you like, if you ask Dolce&Gabbana. The show was obviously about their home country, their roots. They’ve been working with this feeling of nostalgia for years now, creating the Italian myth. The main question this time: how do people outside Italy see Italy? To answer this, we traveled around Italy. Starting in the 1940’s, its post-war period. The models strutted down the catwalk in the most romantic, feminine and typical Italian creations. Fifties sundress silhouettes, appliquéd flowers in every colour, corset tops, cocktail dresses, silken striped caftans, short bouncy skirts, Peruvian pom-poms, all highly decorated, embellished and embroidered with classic Italian emblems and symbols, like the tower of Pisa and Michelangelo’s David. And how fun are those dresses with vintage postcard print and handwritten letters from Capri, Palermo or Lago di Como. We couldn’t think of a better postcard to send home.

However, they haven’t lost touch with the here and now, and that’s when the most loved and hated Selfie came in. Models pretended to be tourists, making selfies while walking through cozy Italian streets and venues. The festive images immediately popped up on screens flanking the catwalk. Needless to say the #DGselfie, #ITALIAISLOVE or #dolcegabbana was on top of the social charts. And it was Italy that was on top of our minds for the rest of that day, because a great and fun collection it was. Like Dean Martin sings, “That’s Amore!”

Roberto Cavalli Fashion Show Milan Womenswear SS2016

A trademark isn’t a trademark for nothing. It means you love it, you own it and you’ll use it in any possible way. For Cavalli that means a collection full of his famous exotic elegance, wild prints, vintage looking denim, flashy metallics and bohemian glamour. And glamour by Roberto Cavalli means: sexy, sexy, sexy. Important ingredients that are inherent in every collection and his seductive take on clothing and women have provided lot’s of women to look their best. Wether in real life or on the red carpet. Since Brigitte Bardot wore his creations in Saint Tropez in the early ’70s, Cavalli has been the king of party glamour. And it is up to the new appointed creative director Peter Dundas, Pucci’s former head designer and former chief designer at Cavalli, to evolve the Cavalli staple and get everyone excited again. Yesterday was his first attempt.

Keyword? Eighties glamour. The era of Dallas and Dynasty. Over the top fashion. It was all in the boxy jackets, high waisted trousers, shiny fabrics, lots of embellishments, acid wash and neon colours (that lilac and pink denim!), oversized waist belts and dresses in all sorts – some with ruffles, some with cut-outs, some flowy others body-con as can be. Don’t worry too much about the combinations, as long as it looks extravagantly glamorous. No question about it: this woman rules her own empire, symbolically translated into a large dose of a digital image of a lion’s face on tailored suiting and dresses. Something that would fit us Dutchies perfectly, as it is our national symbol. You have to start somewhere to get world domination…
