Maison the Faux Catwalk Fashion Show AFW Studio 2019

Het Compagnietheater was crowded Thursday night (Full House!). And we were all in for a treat. Maison the Faux has never been a label that holds straightforward fashion shows. “MAISON pour MAISON” was theater, performance and dance all in one. A multidisciplinary presentation with just a touch of fashion.

The scene presented a series of vignettes that explored all facets of a home. With multiple beds on stage and feathers falling from the ceiling scenes depicting bedroom behavior at it’s most extreme. Settings that reflect the chaos of rehousing. Performers and movers swanned around, maneuvering through the sets and feeling at home within the constructed framework. MAISON the FAUX had their performers breaking free from borders and walls, transitioning from lonesome and confined sensibilities towards a feeling of togetherness. 

All models, dancers, performers wore MAISON the FAUX’s interpretation of leisure wear. Home-wear in it’s most ultimate and elegant form. The looks consisted out of two-piece PJ’s, bedroom gowns, negligee sets and a selection of robes combined with sleeping hats and sweaters and T’s with MAISON the FAUX Melatonin graphics. The home-wear looks were styled with various interior products; pillows, duvets, sleep masks and even mattresses.

YAYA Catwalk Fashion Show FW2019

On Monday evening we took our seats at the Yaya fashion show at the Zuiveringshal in Amsterdam. What a lovely way to start the week! For Fall / Winter 2019 the Dutch fashion brand dived it’s collection into the mysterious Far East and the elusive Japanese society. “Where function meets form and words are as important as silence.” Titled “The Essentials” the show was about creating perfect harmony through contradictions.

Divided into three themes it kicked off with a series of cool and modern looks existing of fashion pieces in somewhat the same color tones. Like a white sweater worn with a white pair of joggers, off white boots and an off white cardigan. Or a skirt, top and boots in the same beige/sand colored palette. Dresses had kimono sleeves, knitwear came with balloon sleeves. The outfits appeared comfy, wearable and desirable all at once. Like the ultimate basic pieces, that are so strong through their simplicity, to build a complete wardrobe upon.

Prints of flowers, birds and dragons gave the collection it’s Eastern, Japanese inspired vibe. Caps and sneakers, bomber jackets, oversized hoodies, leggings and mesh details added a sporty touch to the looks. In line with the logomania trends YAYA was used a a print on some of the knitwear pieces.

A few teddys coats and fur jackets added some extra cosines. And we have a crush on those long puffers. To wear with those skinny jeans, army green shirt and sneakers. Or simply any other outfit shown that night. ‘Cause that’s one of the great things about the Yaya collections; they’re designed in a way almost all items of a collection can be worn together and they can also easily be blended in with your own wardrobe. And we’re sure ours is ready for this hint of the Far East.

Nikkie in Concert: where music meets fashion

Backstage people described the event as Nikkie’s own Victoria’s Secret show, but the show Nikkie Plessen pulled off this Tuesday night, was so much more than just that. NIKKIE IN CONCERT had (mostly) women of all ages going wild on a night filled with performances by some of the best Dutch musicians. Not many womenswear designers can say they filled a concert venue (AFAS) fit for 6000 people with fans and friends of their brand. And not just the line-up (Ronnie Flex, Waylon, Famke Louise, Lil Kleine, Ali B, Jeroen van der Boom, André Hazes and Xander de Buisonjé among others) was mindblowing. The audience filled with Dutch celebs (Martijn Krabbé, Johnny de Mol, John Ewbank), influencers (Noor de Groot, Monica Geuze, Kae Sutherland) and international topmodels like Kate Moss and Natascha Poly was just as impressive.

Anna Nooshin hosted the show, which formed the ultimate blend of music and fashion as models – dressed in the latest Nikkie designs – danced on stage to some of the greatest Dutch hits of the moment. When Waylon came on and performed his version of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean a Victoria’s Secret inspired scene filled the stage and we got to see even more of Nikkie’s new collection (short skirts, knee high boots and beanies were the main fashion message). Of course in such an enormous venue, with so many great artists performing you can imagine it was hard to focus on the clothes. We’d love to see a few more show pieces next time, but it was a night to remember nevertheless.

If any upcoming designer wants to learn about branding he/she can take notes from what Nikkie is and has been doing for season after season now. Might you wonder if she’s able to pull of something even bigger and better? Just stay tuned and see what the next Nikkie event has in store for us. Trinhbecx at Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week

Who knew waste could look this cool? Friday night the designer duo behind Trinhbecx presented their brand new collection made from waste materials. And boy did they exceed our expectations with their line up of original, young and vibrant looks.

The show, which is part of the Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week was scheduled as a “Talking Trash” show. And they couldn’t have picked a better designer duo for this event. Trinhbecx spoke of how they’d been looking for sustainable alternatives to existing materials such as leather and cotton. On their mission to deal with waste more consciously they came up with materials like viscose made from coffee grounds, leather made out of plant cells, and fruit waste turned into (XL) buttons.

You couldn’t tell all of this by watching the show. Cool kids were rocking colourful, sporty looks with a twist. Like the green look worn with purple sneakers that opened the show, made out of three different materials (both sheer and heavy leather like). Patchwork formed a big theme for Trinhbecx as the third look made of pastel shaded parts, sheer logo printed shorts and an animal inspired graphic print showed very clearly. An oversized white colored trenchcoat worn with a head wrap was followed by a pinstripe suits cinched at the waist by a big white belt. The graphic print returned on two fully printed coats with big pockets and buttons (utility mode on!). Sporty trainers, statement jewelry (piercings and colourful necklaces) and cool but practical bags (fanny packs and shoulder bags) brought everything together. An all black leather-ish, Matrix inspired outfit (long heavy coat and again a head wrap) concluded the show.

How amazing waste can look. We’d like a piece, or two.

Benchellal at Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week

After Paris we’d just checked into fashion rehab, only to check out two days later as the fashion train already departs for it’s next destination, a new fashion week, the Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week. Founded in 2014 this fashion week which focuses on sustainable innovations takes place once a year. During this week both young and established designers get a chance to show how they incorporate this theme, which importance is ever growing, in their work. This years sustainability theme: circularity.

On Thursday night designer Mo Benchellal – not a sustainable designer per se, but he was in for an experiment – kicked off the 2018 edition of this fashion week with the presentation of his collection Re-Uniform at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam. A collection of 32 looks created from recycled uniforms, tents and backpacks. Influences from the marine, the fire department and the police were clearly visible in the caps and logo’s. Toughness was also in the details like large pockets, epaulettes and all kinds of straps which came from his deconstructed uniforms. Army greens, deep blue and camouflage prints added to that effect.

And still Benchellal managed to give his collection an absolute feminine twist. He did so by using lots of tulle, satin and taft. By adding ruffles, playing with volume and creating larger than life dresses. An XL army green dress seemed to be made out of a complete tent. The designer even managed to come up with an impressive bridal gown, which the model sported with a camouflage jacket and a blue helmet. Such an interesting contrast! If only our soldiers and officers would go out dressed like this..
