Dennis Diem Catwalk Fashion Show MBFWA SS2018

A special show for Dennis Diem this Saturday evening. With his collection Les Antoinettes the designer celebrates his ten year anniversary. Les Antoinettes tells the story of the life of Dennis Diem’s ultimate muse Marie-Antoinette divided into five different periods; nude, pearl, black, red blood and gold. A collection that brings everything that ever inspired and fascinated Dennis Diem together. Traditional fashion craftmanship, the special role of women, the red carpet.. And did you know Dennis Diem used Marie-Antoinette’s original sizes as a blueprint for all his corsets?

With this collection Diem brought Marie-Antoinette to a contemporary Hollywood-setting (a place where one of Dennis Diem’s current muses, Dorith Mous, is a regular red carpet guest). He did so by creating all the gowns she would have worn in the time of age. From a floor sweeping satin duchesse nude number to a dramatic black tule gown onto statement shiny red and a golden body hugging dress. All creations worn with the highest of heels in which the models walked the runway, accompanied by violin music.

Diem used his signature gilded scales, hand cut silks with baroque patterns, embroideries with fresh water pearls en shelves. And almost all of it was handcrafted, taking Diem and his team three months to cut out sequins, gild them in 23carat gold and manually add them to the designs. Designs with an absolute Hollywood feeling, but if you took a closer look, with extra detailing, beautiful craftsmanship and the tragic story of Marie-Antoinette all hidden in there.

Trinhbecx Catwalk Fashion Show MBFWA SS2018

Tung Trinh and Tim Becx have only been around as a designer duo since 2015. But tonight they let everyone know they’re here to stay. They duo presented a fresh, modern and wearable collection of womenswear looks. With transparency and shine beautifully alternated within every outfit. The looks were both sporty and sophisticated. From a camel coat to a long fluid dress, from heavy leather pants and a blouse with XL sleeves to a body hugging suit with blue, black and white parts, a shiny satin green number and a red patent leather coat. The contrast of the heavy leather and the sheerness worked beautifully. Pockets were extra large as were some of the bags; a sign the Trinhbecx woman like to places and bring a whole lot of stuff with her. Lots to see, lots to like.

Atelier. + Stavreva Kreator Catwalk Fashion Show MBFWA SS2018

Cowboy boots, experimental dresses and coats determined the dress code at Atelier. They looked hand painted and hand woven. Inspired by the work of painters and textile design designer Lotte van Dijk added bright paint strokes, blue pearls and extra plastic layers to the mix. Kimono sleeves, an overall, some assymmetrie, a scarf here, a pair of gloves there and we still couldn’t exactly capture the essence of the collection. But it looked original, artisanal and interesting enough to trigger everyone’s curiosity.

Stavrevra Kreator’s story took us all the way back to 1996, tearing it apart and recreating it all over again. The year in which strong shoulders, pinstriped suits and extra special grooming for men were in fashion. We can hardly remember this was the nineties style, but Stavrevra helped refreshing our memory. She had a whole pack of models, the cool gang, who could have walked straight out of that era. They looked cool and careless in their oversized suits, smudged make-up and out of style sunglasses. As they marched the runway as a group one or two looks were highlighted after each other with every single strutt. A fun choreography to watch and an interesting styling game going on for sure. Bang bang!

Tony Cohen Catwalk Fashion Show MBFWA SS2018

Together with the sponsor of his show Nivea Tony Cohen came up with a ‘reversible black & white dress’. And the designer added some extra forty something looks. His muse Kim Feenstra opened the show as she appeared in front of the bamboo backdrop. A collection made in a black, white, beige, yellow and golden color palette. With designs ranging from oversized of shoulder beach dresses to tight and shiny mini numbers. An overall loose silhouette (looser than ever before, so it seemed) combined with some east-inspired hairstyles and high, open heels turned Tony’s models into confident, elegant and well dressed girls. A dress should be next summer’s dresscode, if you ask Tony. Whether it’s that reversible black & white number or any other floaty showstoppers.

Sophia Bentoh + Sunanda Chandry Koning Catwalk Fashion Show MBFWA SS2018

Togo born print designer Sophia Bentoh presented her eclectic new collection this afternoon. A mix of kaleidoscopic designs styled in the most fun (large jewelry, sunglasses, headscarfs, crowns, dr. Martens and out of the box bags) way. A show both rhythmic and ethnic that felt refreshing, original and fun. Ibileye presents layered prints and pieces for both women and men, for city nomads who dare to stand out with mixed colours and patterns. And these designs will do just that.

The Sunanda Chandry Koning spoke more of gender blending than of new clothing styles for next summer. The show images say it all.

Merel van Glabbeek + RE by RECONSTRUCT Catwalk Fashion Show MBFWA SS2018

After having shown several looks during the latest Future Generation Presents The Painting six months ago Merel van Glabbeek was back at MBFWA on Friday. At the Transformatorhuis she presented her brand new collection. A collection full of vibrant looks in a color palette ranging from white and red to brown and black. A number of kimono inspired dresses looked easy to wear, yet had a luxurious touch to them. Embroidered details and tassle accessories gave the collection an extra exotic, perhaps even eastern- touch. Highly decorated, arty headpieces combined with super tight braids and interesting ankle boots turned the sophisticated looks into a complete fashion story. In Merel’s designs there’s always a focus on extensive handcrafting so this collection was no exception. And all that hard work certainly paid off today.

Blue spikes, green hair, purple make-up, headbands, braids and chunky piercings; there was nothing plain about the models looks at Rotterdam fashion collective Reconstruct. Same goes for their clothing. Designers Laura Aanen, Zara Asmail, Alyssa Groeneveld, Kim Kivits, Michelle Lievaart and Sanne Verkleij came up with deconstructed shirts, shiny cut-out suits, cropped hoodies and kimono inspired gear. Overall the looks were tough (how about that guy smoking on the runway?) and sporty. On to the next boxing match! And let’s hope nobody gets strangled by all those bands and straps.
