Trend Report SS2018: Plastic Party

We’re diminishing our use of plastic anywhere else, but in fashion it’s more trending than ever. Plastic parts and complete transparency formed a big theme for SS2018. Some of the biggest names in the game like Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Burberry and Valentino threw their own little plastic party. Balmain is even taking the trend one step further as the brand’s FW2018 collection fully focuses on the material as well. From convenient raincoats to dresses, handbags and even see through boots; we’re loving the fact that plastic can look this fantastic. Shiny, futuristic, recyclable and even kind of sexy if you like.

Trends ss2010: fantastic plastic

How can you protect yourself from the rain and still look sexy?

Zac Posen, Sonia Rykiel, Frankie Morello, D Squared and others gave us the answer: you just wear a transparent plastic raincoat. In this way you’re still showing the great outfit you’re wearing underneath and your silhouette stays visible too.

For next spring transparent plastic was used by several different designers. Isn’t it typical that at least four designers came up with a see-through raincoat, independently of each other? At all four shows these raincoats also popped up out of nowhere and didn’t really connect to the rest of the clothes in the collections.
But the raincoat wasn’t the only transparent plastic item; there were bags and shoes as well, for example at Prada. D Squared and Charles Anastase both had transparent bags too.

Michael Kors used the plastic for his bathing suits and bracelets. Out of everything we saw the most fantastic plastic was made by Frankie Morello. He came up with a chique Chanel-looking plastic jacket, which had collar and cuffs made out of fabric.

Streetstyle trend SS2019: See through Things

Who needs lace, mesh or tule when you can dress up in plastic! A big theme out on the streets were see through plastic items. Like those raincoats and Fendi trenches. Like all kinds of see through bags (yes, we know exactly what you’re carrying in your handbag). Like those (semi transparent and sheer) skirts that make you wanna wear fancy (& fashionable) bottoms all of a sudden. And let’s not forget that good old see through umbrella that makes a good streetwear picture, even on a rainy day. Are you all for transparency? Wrap up in plastic, it’s.. so summer 2019 😉

Marlou Breuls x Spongebob catwalk fashion show AFW Studio 2019

Spongebob’s pineapple (life-size) awaited us at the Compagnietheater (the new location for this edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week) today. It was the backdrop for Marlou Breuls (who founded her label in 2016)couture collection presentation in which she brought an ode to Spongebob (the Nickelodeon serie which is celebrating it’s 20th birthday this year). She called it ‘The Icon Collection’, a selection of just 8 statement couture pieces. All colorful pieces with a 3D silhouette. From a Turquoise ‘mermaid’like dress with holes in it to a A-line shaped pastel yellow ‘sponge’ dress. The finale dress was a true showstopper, a metallic punch colored wedding gown with plastic bubbles (or pearls if you will) attached to it. We couldn’t have wished for a more joyful start of this edition of AFW Studio.

Proenza Schouler Catwalk Fashion Show New York FW2019

After a few shows in Paris Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough returned to NYFW this week. With a collection of oversized boxy jackets and long, dashing silhouettes. Tweed suits were made feminine by the tight bodies and bare skin underneath it. Roomy coats were cinched at the waists. A few long and lean dresses had wholes at the armpits, others had mesh details around the neck. There was duality in many looks, like a semi leather jacket, a sleeveless denim jacket (worn over a trench) and the pleated bottoms of some dresses. A plastic trenchcoat looked like a huge necessity for our Dutch fall season. Overall the collection was sophisticated and classic with the right touch of modernity.

Whether it’s plastic, latex, patent leather or metallic you’re wearing a good autumn look needs a little shine. Chanel, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Nina Ricci and Simone Rocha all introduced us to a glossy glimmer look. Those high shine trenchcoats at Fendi being the trend’s leaders. Matching boots and bags to go! Are you ready for a new type of (waterproof) sexiness? Shine bright like a pair of rusty colored Chanel pants.

Sies Marjan Catwalk Fashion Show NYC SS2019

Mom’s the word. At Sies Marjan designer Dutch Sander Lak (36) let his mom Marjan (his father’s name was Sies) walk the runway. And not just her, his biggest critic, was part of his model cast. Childhood friends and model friends like Kaia and Presley Gerber (their mother Cindy Crawford came out to support them) were present too. “This collection’s cast is made of a group of people I love and admire, many who are part of my daily life. Friends and family, Sies Marjan coworkers, great models we love, and new ones we’re just getting to know. In a sense, this group is my home too”, Sander Lak said.

The color palette was on point as always with Lak, who worked under master colorist Dries Van Noten. Colors like ocher yellow, violet, deep red, bright blue and, burgundy and lilac were vibrant and fresh. Quite some complete crispy white looks as well. But besides color Lak experimented with materials and textures too. He came up with painted leathers, washed cottons, and show stopping croc-mimicking plastics.

Most impressive were the layered looks. Like the khaki colored look Malgosia Bela wore. Like the pinstriped blue ensemble Charlotte O’Donnell sported. Or the pink colored skirt + coat Dree Hemingway (who by the way rocked a fresh, super short new haircut) introduced. And the leather burgundy outfit that followed up. Anwar Hadid walked the show in a printed suit and a heavy gray vest.

Mom looked stunning and comfy in a nautical striped design. Proof that this collection has a bit of both; edgy vs. comfy. Those features might need to come together a bit more. But overall this was another strong, fresh and wearable line up of Sies Marjan looks. Mom Marjan will be so proud.

AMSTERDAM FASHIONWEEK SS18

Dutch pride in the South of France this week. Designers Rushemy Botter (32) and Lisi Herrebrugh (28) have won the biggest price in menswear fashion in Hyères this week. Their colorful collection filled with streetstyle elements and fishing details ‘Fish or Fight’ (check out the backstage images we shot during AFW) won the first price at the fashion and photography festival in the South of France. A money price of fifteen thousand Euro, a capsule collection collaboration worth of 10.000 with Petit Bateau and access to Premiere Vision, one of the biggest fabric fairs. It’s a price once (in 1993) won by Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf, which set of their career internationally. Besides fashion Fish or Fight talks of sustainability and environmental issues, fishing nets and plastic inflatables worn as headpieces being a direct reference to pollution. The Fish or Fight collection, which forms the ultimate mix of formal and casual wear as it shows deconstructed suits, zipped up jackets and (multiple) caps with a huge amount of cool, has already won more prices (the Ann Demeulenmeester Award, the Flanders DC Award, the Dries van Noten Award, the Belmodo Award, the Knack Weekend Award and was voted ‘Most Promising Graduate’ at the Belgian Fashion Awards). Besides, there is still a chance Rushemy and Botter, who run their workspace in Antwerp, win the LVMH Price 2018 of 300.000 euro on the 6th of June. So high hopes for this Dutch duo, that is definitely on everyone’s radar right now.

Trend Report SS2018: Kingsday

Kingsday is just around the corner. But before you start stacking up on ill-fitting orange T-shirts, shorts, cheap ass plastic caps, headbands and glasses, we’d like to give you a different idea on how to wear orange. You see, it doesn’t have to be bold and bright all over. As our favorite streetstyle stars have shown us recently just a jacket or coat can make enough of a color statement. And an all black outfit with a touch of tangerine works just as well. Want to celebrate the King’s birthday in the most subtle way? How about an orange colored pair of those arty ‘cat-eye’ glasses worn with a sharp looking on trend look. Queen Maxima will certainly approve. Chances are she is not even wearing orange the 27th.

So we’ve talked plastic and see through fashion, now let’s talk of transparent and sheer shoes; another big trend! With mesh and plastic being the most used materials you really need to make sure you get that pedicure appointment done in time. From Alexander Wang and Balmain to Dior and Valentino proved next to nude shoes are a ‘thing’ for SS2018. The perfect detail to top off that mini skirt or downgrade that sexy dress. From sandals to pumps, to booties and boots; time to show off those perfectly colored toe nails. Or did you get cold feet?
