Graduation Shows 2011 – ArtEZ Arnhem

On thursday night, right after Topshop was opened in Amsterdam, Arnhem became the fashion hotspot again. There the fashion crowd (and many moms, dads, brothers, sisters and friends) gathered for the graduation show (one of a total of 5 shows!!) of 22 ArtEZ students. In a warm, sold out and fully packed show area, which is part of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale, we witnessed one and a half hour of some great ArtEZ fashion.

The collections of all 22 students couldn’t be more diverse. From childrenswear (Cleome Clements) to minimalistic (Sanne Schepers)- and survival (Jarwo Gibson) wear, from skinhead styles (Tom Nijhuis) to asymmetric items (AnneMarie Keizers) and from on trend fashion (Zonia van Uden) to over the top, structured designs (Annie Bosman); a perfect mix of signatures and styles.

ArtEZ seemed especially proud of talents like Linda de Jong, Anne Bosman (structured menswear), Mattia Akkermans (bright designs, crazy styling), Magnus Dekker (a collection made out of flags) and Sanne Schepers.

Linda de Jong presented some extraordinary selfmade fabrics. She showed a lot of knitwear and even used plastic in some of her Chanel-inspired designs.

Another great collection was made by Sanna Schepers. Sanne showed skirts and tops, which were scecretly attached to each other. Her designs looked simple, but in fact were made out of some difficult constructions.

A graduation student who really stood out too is William Tan. His designs (he showed so many looks) were perfectly tailored and his prints were stunning.

All these students proved they have a clear vision of their own style and potential. They also know how to turn 6 or 7 looks into a collection, which not everyone can.

ArtEZ received a Grand Seigneur this month; a corpus award for people/companies in the fashion industry and judging from some of the great collections we saw this award was well deserved.

Jil Sander and Prada designed two of the most popular collections of this season, which made their contribution to the Arnhem Mode Biënnale extra special. Prada brought pieces of their actual Milan catwalk to Arnhem and Jil Sander’s collection can be looked at through several magnifying lenses.

Arnhem Mode Biennale 2011: Dutch Design

During the Arnhem Mode Biënnale Dutch Design is well represented. You can, for instance, take a look at some of the designs Klavers van Engelen and Iris van Herpen made.

A design made by Iris van Herpen is placed within the exposition as a fountain. The design (A/W 2011) already told a great story on water and now this story is visualized even better.

Klavers van Engelen showed their airy designs, brought to live by small windmills, making the dresses dance with the wind. Their question: “Wanna Dance Amber?”

Arnhem Mode Biennale: on the street

Team Peter Stigter went on the streets of Arnhem to teach thirteen photographers the tricks of good streetfashion photography. After a short lecture at cafe Dudok in Arnhem they left with one of our photographers to catch some fashionable and interesting dressed people. It wasn’t easy – Dutch like their casual style –  but the result was promising.

Arnhem Mode Biennale 2011: Young Designers

The installation Prologues shows you the work of 22 different young designers. They are uncomprimising, ingenious and resourceful. They make the fashion they want to make without thinking to much about the wearability. With this installation Amber wants to celebrate this attitude and not let the designer’s creativity be stopped by commercialism.

You’ll see designs of Central Saint Martins students next to designs of Bas Kosters and Marryme-JimmyPaul.

It was an exciting day today at the second day of Arnhem Mode Biennale. Team Peter Stigter held their first workshop ever in collaboration with Dudok Arnhem. Thirteen men and women registered for the workshop streetfashion photography and they picked out a wonderful sunny day.

First Peter Stigter and Joris Bruring held a short lecture about the history of streetphotography – Henry Cartier Bresson, Bill Cunningham, The Sartorialist – and after a delicious lunch in the garden of Dudok Arnhem the students were sent off to the centre of Arnhem. Guided by one of our teammembers- Jon, Jeannette or Joris – they had to practice what they learned. And it wasn’t easy. We really admire their courage and the way they worked at the streets, it’s not easy to handle people and stay focused at the same time!

Arnhem Mode Biennale 2011: Special Projects

From the first of June till the third of July the city of Arnhem is all about fashion. During this month many events will be held and expositions will be open. There’s so much to do and to see you might wanna head to Arnhem a more than once. Besides, there’s one more reason to go back since some of the expositions change throughout the month.

For instance, there’s this installation made by A.F. Vandevorst. It shows a girl sleeping in a hospital bed completely made out of candle wax. This candle was lit during the opening of the biënnale and will slowly melt down during this month.

Then there is the Juun. J installation; a series of trench coats in the same color. Though the trenchcoat is quite timeless and classic in fashion Juun. J lets his trenchcoats evolve. For a month the hourglasses placed above the coats will cover the garments with sand. We’re curious how the coats are going to look within a few weeks…

The third installation that will look completely different within a month is the one created by Amie Dicke. She filled a space with her personal belongings that together created a room full of memories. Above these items an installation was placed with a number of spray guns attached to it. During the next month those spray guns will spray 100 liter of foundation (provided by L’ oreal) on all personal items. The many layers of foundation will cover up all colors and make it into a room in just one tone. A radical male-over.

Arnhem Mode Biennale 2011: Highlights MMKA

Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem (MMKA)

One of the exposition areas of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale 2011 is the Museum of Modern Art (Museum voor Moderne Kunst). During this month you can go there to visit the Get Real / Real Self exposition. This expo, created by Joke Robaard en Giene Steenman, basically forms a spacial encyclopedia of clothes.

Like fashion editors Robaard and Steenman combined visual images, real clothes and words to present us their idea of the language of fashion… You’ll see a range of different coats and parkas, you’ll meet a mouse made of clothes, you bump into Brooke Shields and you’ll discover why fashion is about getting real.

Series of capes and parkas ranging from functional (a Hema rain coat or an old parka worn by Eskimos) to fashionable (a designer parka/coat)
